    Hi All,

Sorry if this is a stupid question just not sure how it works.

I really fancy one of the new Ford Ranger Raptors but am unsure how this works in terms of insurance and tax in Ireland. Is it possible to register this and insure and tax as a personal vehicle or how can I go about it?

Just FYI I am an employee (i.e. suit and desk) so there would be no commercial use for the vehicle apart from commuting and going to and from meetings. Just like the look of it!

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Tks

Insurance question could surely be answered by any insurance company?

I did the switch from a "normal car" to a commercial (Hilux) a few months ago. It's possible, but if you want to stay inside the legalities, a bit expensive and difficult.

Tax: Commercial vehicles are taxed by the old tax system (so, by engine size). That's 1494€/year for my 3.0l Hilux, or 1809€/year for a 3.2l ranger.

Yes, you can tax a pickup commercially for a lot less.
Yes, you can probably get away with it forever as so many people do.
No, that's not legal for your purpose. It's not even a gray area.

In terms of insurance, you might need to ring around quite a few insurances to find one that takes you. I ended up with Allianz, where I pay about 10% more for my 2015 Hilux 3.0 diesel than I paid before for my 2006 RAV4 2.0 petrol. Fair enough.

Allianz considered my no claims bonus from my previous private car insurance, but that required cancelling my car insurance, send back the disc to my previous insurer, get a written confirmation from them with very specific wording (as defined by Allianz), in order to get the new policy instated.

If your current insurer is willing to insure you with a commercial policy, it would probably be simpler.
