Maybe a thread title should be "who shouldn't be taxed?"....

Tax the overweight, tax the healthy ... those are two extremes, and as usual the answer lies somewhere in between.

Tax the healthy? That's Communism. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." There are sound economic reasons why that dog don't hunt. I don't think I need to go in to detail there.

Tax the overweight? Why not take it even further? Keep tax out of it altogether, and privatise all healthcare. Hospitals will be free to charge what they want, for whatever reason. So if you're perfectly healthy, and never need medical help, you'll never be charged anything. People with health problems - regardless of whether it's their "fault" or not - will be charged the full cost.

Of course, insurers would then jump in to that market, since there is money to be made. Healthcare insurers already exclude pre-existing conditions, so if you were born with a heart defect, they won't help ypu with anything related to that.

In economics there is something called a Pigovian Tax: a tax explicity designed to change behaviour. The massive tax on cigarettes in Ireland is an example of this. How well is that working, do we know? Is it getting people to stop smoking? Now try and imagine how well a Pigovian Tax will work on something much more complex, such as being overweight, when empty calories are the cheapest foods in the stores?

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Too right. Could use the hair for making natural clothes products instead of all the artificial materials that are bad for the earth.
