An post announce closure of cork mail centre. Does anyone think An Post can survive as a delivery company?, is this just an insight into the future? A future with one “superhub”. (Not in Naas) taking all the jobs from Cork, Tullamore & Athlone.

An Post business is parcels, they're taking it in.
It's a small country, centralising resources makes sense.

I believe the staff and unions have come to agreements with management in recent times regarding changes.

Cutting staff is the new cost savings. The way of the future... just means peoples memories are short. It's been the done thing for a long time. More so over the last 10/12 years. Closing the site also means less rent, utilities, insurance.

Yeah some of their services have actually increased particularly package delivery ..people ordering stuff online gives an post huge amounts of business.

But a lot of stuff is becoming automated ..they need less human staff.

All pensions etc paid in the post office should be paid directly into a bank or credit union account

Centralising does make sense, but we have a massive problem with everything being centralised in Dublin. We need to balance the population more evenly across the island, by building up larger urban centres outside the Dublin region. It will solve, or at least greatly ameliorate, many basic problems here in Dublin while also giving those areas a huge boost.

Logistics requires transport links. Most are out from Dublin or into Dublin. And I'd dare say, that's becuase a lot of it targets Dublin.

Portlaoise or Athlone would make pretty good locations in terms of a logistics hub serving the entire country outside of Dublin.

    Why?

Yes why? A lot of pensioners want to collect from the post office. Others don’t so they should and afaik do have the choice.

Yep. Cork is a hub for Cork alone. Couple hubs more centrally and then use the delivery units for the last mile.

There is a new generation of pensioners now. They don't.

    Why not ?

I'm sure a good few people want to go to Mars, but it isn't a good reason

    Instead of :

getting on the bus, swiping their card, going to the post office, collecting their pension and doing a bit of shopping and heading home

    they could :

get on the bus, swipe their card, do a bit of shopping and head home

An Post would have died years ago except the internet and online shopping saved their bollix. Nobody posts letters per say anymore. Happy birthday is said online or via text now. Online billing was another kick for them. It's a bit like Xtra Vision when streaming kicked in. **** all Blacksmiths left either, or glass bottles or coal fires etc....(Video killed the Radio Star lol)

This was flagged a good while ago and staff will receive redeployment or a pay off that would be something many peopĺe in the private sector could only dream of.

Why the "Not in Naas" comment? I live in Newbridge, a few miles away, and if I send a letter to my next-door neighbour, it goes to Portlaoise before being delivered back to Newbridge.

(I don't know why I wouldn't just put it in their letter box! :pac: )

I think? Naas has already been increased (staffing) with the duties of staff control, wages, etc being centralised there.

    You lazy so & so.

They don’t have to. It’s their choice. Mine is lodged in ulster bank, some of my friends prefer the post office. It called choice.

Richard Briton says they will be needed to retrofit homes. ( he didn’t but did say employment will change and cited the cmc closure )

As is absolutely their entitlement if they've paid into this state for decades. I'm sure the Irish state is quite happy not having to pay for their healthcare, too.

Doesn’t the healthcare card EHIC have to paid for by the HSE, which is fine by me but what about all those ‘previously’ UK and now claiming Irish passports , who pays for their healthcare in EU now?

The following generations of pensioners won't be as lucky. Just you wait.

‘They’ are always banging on about pensions and everybody taking out a pension plan and the tax relief etc,. What they don’t tell you is that is it taxed (fair enough.) and USCd at 8% so and you have to start ‘drawing’ it down at age 60, even though your still at work and don’t want to touch it. Effectively 48% tax and I’m not sure about PRSI. if you don’t touch it you are still taxed etc as though you did withdraw from it (I think it’s 4% compulsory)

    Off topic .
