Advice - carry long load with only a saloon car

I need to get a hand rail for stairs and just have a saloon car (A4) with no roof rack or folding seats.

The car is 4.5 M long and the rail is 4.2M. (basically, a pole) I was thinking of strapping it to the passenger side of the car, rolling down the windows and tying it to the B pillar and the front of the front door and back of back door (near A and C pillars). Will tie rags to both ends. A bit like those vans that have glass on their side.

Trip is about 8km/15 min (Chadwicks in Coolock to Marino if anyone know the route).

What would AGS think of this? Any other ideas?

    Ask about delivery?

I'm not sure if they do but will check. But my elderly mother would be there and she often does not hear the door. Looking to do it Sat morning.

Does the car have a sunroof?

Have you no friend with a van or something larger?
If not, get one of those "man with a van" people who do small piece work like this

You should be able to get it go from the dash, down the side of the passenger seat and then onto the rear parcel shelf. Basically the inside version of what you were planning!

Or just rent a "go car" van for an hour

I'm pretty sure none of my mates has a van or roof rack.

I did the inside thing before but 4.2m is way too long.

Just checked go car - Ford Transit Connect SWB for E10 an hour. Would that take the load?

Buy a roof rack for about €100 off micks garage, handy to have and you don't need to rely on anyone.

Are you going to paint/stain it ??

You could bring a fine/tenon saw and cut it at 45° or even 35° in the yard and bring it home that way easy. I've done similar.

At home use a drill and dowel and wood glue to return it to its glory.

The LWB sprinter is the type of van that can take 4.2 and just barely depending on how the bulkhead is implemented.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think I might cut it. I measures my mother's stairs and it's exactly 4M and 4.2 seems to be the standard size, so it needs cutting anyway.

You would be better to install a full piece handrail rather than cutting it. Joints in a handrail lead to all sorts of complications,

Has she a side/front garden? Just get them to drop it there - no need to disturb your mother.

Had similar problem years ago - 4 metres long ladder on top of saloon corolla - put an old mattress on the roof, ladder on it, ratchet strap to middle pillars, ratchet strap to a towing eye (or whatever you call it) under front bumper and the same under rear bumper. Sorted! :D

if its securely fixed and your driving at a suitable speed, and according to your measurements it wont even overhang the car, and its a short journey, I can't see what all the drama is about. Tie a couple of red rags to each end as well to be sure.

IF you get it home in one piece will you be able to get it into the house? i.e. you may need to cut anyhow, stairs often put in before doors in houses when there's better "swinging" room

I've been in hundreds of houses from new builds to over a hundred years old and I can't for the life of me imagine what kind of design you have in mind.

Get a bottle of helium and a large balloon and a rope. Tie the thing onto the baloon and drag it along with the rope tied to the car. Make sure there are no powerlines or bridges crossing the road along your route

I think based on the hysteria in the thread, talking the roof off the house and helicoptering it in would be the best boards type solution. Needs to be an electric helicopter though and not a fossil fuel one.

Thinking outside the box here, could you tie it underneath the car, to the front and back bumper, or bring a piece of timber with you that extends the length of the inside of the car , let down the two passenger side windows, and tie the hand rail through the open windows to the piece of timber inside the car.

Hi Thanks for all your advice!

I rang Chadwicks and they can deliver to a small time window and leave in garden if required. I'm going to go now and order it and pay and take the brackets with me.

Gone off the idea of cutting as just making work for myself. No problem getting it in door.

But, I do like the idea flying it in!

Since the handrail is shorter than the car itself I don't think there would be much issue with affixing it to the passenger side, or maybe better, strap it to the roof.

bring a couple of friends with you, and get them to hold onto it through the passenger-side windows.

I don't have any friends ... they all died helping me move the grand piano.

I actually already paid for delivery this morning, booked it for Friday.

Open the driver and passenger window and just pass it through and work away.
It'll also clear the roads of those pesky cyclists and pedestrians. Who needs em anyway.

    sounds like too much hassle
I’d just be done with it and attach your mother’s house on to the a4 and bring it there

My question seems to have been de-railed into a joke thread!

Don't be silly, the logical solution is of course to move into a bungalow!
