Hi all, hope you can help.

I will be picking up a new car a few weeks from now.
I will be giving the car i currently own now to my dad.
I will be trading in my dads old car against my new 1.

In terms of paperwork, what would be needed?

For the car you currently own:
Fill out the change of ownership section on the back of the Vehicle Registration Cert (logbook) with your dad's details as the new owner. Then post it off to the address in Shannon, Co Clare, listed on the document. Your dad will then be sent out a new logbook confirming him as the new owner.

For the car you are buying from the dealer:
Give the dealer your dad's vehicle registration cert (logbook) with his car and make sure they put you down as the new owner(not your dad) on the new car your buying when they go to setup the change of ownership online. Most dealers can do the change of ownership online these days. Take note that if it's a brand new car or newly registered imported used car then you will not receive the new vehicle registration cert (logbook) until you first tax the car.

I doubt it will matter whose name your Dad's car is in currently, just say it to the garage man and it won't be an issue.

I'd say Bazz is saying more to point it out. Dealer admin would be so used to buying in the Part-Ex and registering the new car at the same time, to the same address as on the VLC, that it would be easy for an error to occur then.

Yeah, that's what I mean. If the dealer has admin staff who upload the new registrations in bulk one or two days a week then they may just assume that the name on the old logbook will be the name to register the new(er) car under. I've had it happen me in the past. It's not a huge issue to put right but just extra hassle all the same.
