I have a driving test coming up next month but the car Ile be doing my test in is due for an NCT which I have booked only thing is the NCT is going to be after the test as it was the only date I could get for it. I assume there would be no problem for the test as long as the NCT is booked also the car won't be displaying an NCT disc as this will be the first NCT that this car will be taking.

no you need a full windscreen in order to do the test

You should be able to get a cancellation slot for the NCT.

Would've thought it would be fine if the NCT was booked similar to the way the Guards can't prosecute you if an NCT was booked even if the disc wasn't there or in date

If any of your Tax/Insurance/NCT discs are out of date the test will not be conducted.

You need a valid NCT, your booking means nothing and does not confirm the car will pass. Call the NCT centre and see if you can get a cancellation.

The above is also not true, perhaps a Gard will let you off with it if you have the booking but that is at their own discretion.

If you go to the NCT website in the morning they put up all the cancellations (not sure exact time try look between 8 and 9) so you should be able to book one before your test.

You may well be alright given that this is the first NCT the tester may not go so far as to check the exact date it is due, they may just assume it is under 4 years (you may get caught on the 151/152 depending on dates).

You should get the NCT but if I was in your shoes and definitely could not get it I think I would still chance turning up to the test you may get lucky but you may also lose the test fee.

I rescheduled the driving test until after the NCT time suits me better anyway. The car should pass the NCT as it was only bought last year and had a full service before it was bought.

You'd be surprised, my dad failed his first NCT on his 4 year old car, I can't remember exactly what it was, nothing too bad but more than just a bulb or that.
I found it very funny as my own 18 year old car passed the previous month with no issues.

    You should be alright though.

You are best to get it done though as the test can be enough stress by itself without having to worry about something else.

Anyone with an extension on their policy for the driving of other cars can take the car to the centre for you.

I'm on someone else's policy but I would've thought I wouldn't be insured to drive a car for the test that I'm not insured on

I thought the issue was no NCT and that's what you needed to sort out.
Are you saying you are not insured on this car either? Is there any policy on the car? The owner may be able to add you as a named driver for the day.
What about the instructor you did lessons with? They may be able to rent you a car for the day that will be fully insured for any learner to use.

No I'm only insured on the car that's due it's NCT and no other car. Ile look into doing it in an instructors car if the car fails the NCT but my preference is to do it in the car I'm insured on as it's what I'm used to driving.

That's why I was saying anyone with an extension on their policy to drive other cars could try to get the NCT sorted while you are on holidays.

Oh I wasn't sure what you meant. Ile be going on holidays with the person that owns the car and I wouldn't want to be hassling anyone to bring it for me also the car will probably be parked at the airport while I'm away.

Well if it's impossible to get an NCT on the car before the test you will need a different car.

I don't think anyone is going to recommend chancing it and hope they do not notice and also hope you don't run into the guards on the day as it's a fine and mandatory penalty points.

Just as an update to this situation I'm pleased to say the car passed the NCT today and the driving test is tommorrow two weeks let's hope Ile keep my fingers and toes crossed a similar result is achieved in the driving test as today's NCT.

Are you saying they refused to conduct the test because your tax was out of date?

If the car isn't taxed it's not road legal so no test.

If a car has no NCT it can not be driven on a public road....

The only time a car can be driven without tax is if it's signed off the road and is booked for NCT.

One can drive to the test centre and back.
