I can’t find an answer elsewhere.
Bought a car on Friday the 22nd and I’ll get the logbook sometime next week.

If it comes before the end of the month am I liable for tax for this month too?

You are liable for this month regardless of when you get the VLC.

Doesn't matter when the log book arrives. It's based on the transfer of ownership. If the vehicle is in your name from the 22nd you are liable to pay from the 1st of the same month.

You're liable from whatever the day if purchase is on the logbook.
So even if it was the 30th on the logbook you be liable for June, same as if you bought it on 1st.
The day the logbook arrives is irrelevant

You are liable for tax from the date of sale.

Everyone above is correct that you're liable for tax for June.

However you're also entitled to make a statment that you didn't use vehicle in public place in June, and therefore you can be exempt from paying tax for June.
You have 21 days from date of sale to make such declaration. Can be made online or on the form in motortax office. You can't do it before car is registered in your name by Shannon though, but as you're saying logbook should arrive next week, then you can fill the declaration on 1st July where you'll declare that car was not used in public place in June, and then tax it from 1st July.

That’s the job so thanks a million. It’s old tax 3 liter so I’d rather not pay €400+ for two months...

Sign off the road until you're ready to use and then tax....

Otherwise if too are sell to family members and buy back.... No tax outstanding then... And yes it's legal....
