Is any of this salvageable\worthwhile keeping?

Need to start a new thread because my hope of simply adding a graphics card ended in failure

I have a 5 year old Dell Optiplex desktop that I am looking to upgrade or just bite the bullet and replace? The reason? I want to finally give Fallout 4 a go. Not exactly a new game I know, but what I have will not run it!

So, is there any way that I can do this on the cheap? Not looking for the latest and greatest and a small case would be perfect. I do have the following components if they would be usable?
CPU - i7-4770 3.40 GHz
RAM - 16GB (4x 4GB). Assuming it's DDR3.
SSD - 128GB Samsung for OS
HDD - 1TB Samsung HD103SJ for programs, data, etc.

I'm assuming I'd need a case, PSU and graphics card. Would happily go for 2nd hand if that would save on € and obviously there would be a saving going for the last generation of kit.

Thanks for all that - much appreciated. €280ish is well worth it! I definitly want to pull the trigger on some of this stuff.

Just a couple of quick questions -
1. If I grab all that gear, will it simply fit all together? The CPU will fit into the Motherboard, the motherboard into the case, etc. This may well be all generic fitting, but it's just new to me! Also, do I need any additional cables for data or power?
2. Would you trust Ali Express? I thought that they were only good for knock-off stuff!

5. There is a fan on the CPU at the moment - would you not just use it? Perhaps this would not fit the Azus motherboard? Either way, the more silent the better so if they are all the same size, would this be step up?

1. Yes, everything should fit together - they're all standardized to ATX spec. Just read the manuals
2. AliExpress is very trustworthy, I buy stuff from there all the time. Youtuber Tech Yes City has been building machines with parts from there for ages, too.
3. That link is to an auction. Cheaper with Buy-It-Now here: €47 (minor defect) / €52.88
4. ex-crypto cards should be ok, though I just checked and you can get a brand-new one on OCUK for €124, and it includes 2 free games too.
5. That be Quiet you have is perfectly suited. I'd just get some cheap MX-4 or similar paste for when you change it over to the new motherboard.

Sorry x what I meant was that there is s stock Dell fan on top of the CPU at the moment. If I do need to upgrade, then I’d like to go for as silent as possible so that’s why I thought that the Be Quiet one looked better (based on the reviews).

Ok, so I’ve pulled the trigger on the following -
Case
Case fan
Graphics Card
PSU

All on Amazon. Will wait and see about the CPU fan.

The motherboard is an issue though- the only ones available come from China and will take ages to come unless I pay over €50 for shipping, and even then it’s not that fast.

Are there any alternative options? Different products maybe? There are some new Asus ones on Amazon that are fairly cheap but I’ve no idea if they are right for me.

Yes, just get a H81M or B85 motherboard from Ebay UK seller, can get them for about €35-50 + €10 shipping. Find a reputable seller, or pay an extra few euro for a new rather than refurbished one if you prefer.

Ordering from China makes no sense. It would take ages, and you will likely get slapped with customs and handling fees on top of that.

Thanks. The H81m only has 2 RAM slots and I have 4x4gb so it won’t work. I did find this B85 in Germany - does it fit in with my processor and everything else?

At this point, could you cancel the Amazon order? Something like this - configured with Ryzen 2600, RX580, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD - comes to not much more than €600.

Considering you could probably sell your old PC for €250, it's far less hassle and you end up with a way better machine too.

Very interesting. I don’t know much about the Ryzen CPUs do I need to look into that.
