To Focus or not to Focus

Hi all, looking for some recommendations before I go looking at cars -

Currently drive a 2011 1.6 Diesel Focus 115PS. Average 20k miles a year. Lot of motorway driving. Bought in 2014 and had it for 4 great years, but the last year of non-stop problems might steer me away from Ford this time round. Budget is flexible (14,000+) and could possibly stretch to buying new if it made most sense.

Looking for diesel, something comfortable, solid for motorway and a bit 'nippier' than the focus, but don't want an SUV. Would go for something more powerful if reasonable MPG. Was going to look at Hyundai i30..or 40! (heard Hyundai engine's reliable? but the i30 at least doesn't look like much), Kia Cee'd, Volkswagen...Skoda? Rented a Corolla and loved driving it - but so light, it was stormy one night and felt like I was going to be blown off the road. Great thing about the Focus being heavier it feels safe! So not ruling out another Focus either.

Don't mind putting the € into a good car as it's my main expense and want to enjoy driving. Have got loads of recommendations and mechanic's 'most reliable engines', but reading reviews of them Vs Focus is putting me off half of them before I start! I know I just have to get test-driving but want to narrow it down. Looking for yere experiences and wisdom if any suggestions.. cheers!

If you like the Ford then the a newer shape Mondeo from 2015 onwards might be of interest. 2.0 litre would have more poke than than the 1.6/1.5 litre versions.
