What kind of tree is this?

I noticed they are quite common in ditches / hedges. Why were they used for ditches? Is it to reinforce the clay mound?

Also they kind of look like a big woody version of this.

    Are they related?

The tree is a Hawthorn. They are used in hedgerow as they are thorny and grow dense and so keep animals in/out.

Very common and I just planted 100 or so.

The second is cow parsley - their flowers look vaguely similar but they are entirely unrelated.
