    Hey all,

Laying a paving, the area is 231 inches X 172 inches.

Was thinking of laying sand as the base, 1 inch deep.

So can anyone figure out how much sand would be enough? I thinking 1 tonne, the brother reckons we need 1.5 tonne of sand.

    Any help greatly appreciated

Not many people use imperial measurements thesedays.
You haven't given a lot of information.
    Is your site level?
Do you want it to be?
    Has it been paved before?

Was looking a three suppliers, all selling sand by the tonne.

Site is level with a slight slope for water run off.

    Never paved before.

    to answer your question....
    5.8674m (=231 inches) x 4.3688 (=172) x .025 (1inch) = 0.640837428 cubic metres
1 bag will cover you. (think there's about .75 cubic metres in a bag)
Edit: .8 to .85 cubic metres in a bag, according to this...

Dont use builders sand, you need sharp sand.
Look up the pavingexpert.com website. Pay attention to sub-bsae layer section. and screeding section.

If the above calculation is correct you'll need 1.3 tonnes approx.

Convert to cm and you need .76 of a cubic metre.

1 metric ton = .65 cubic metres so you'd need about 1.2 tonnes.

If the site was never paved before then if you don't strip off all the top soil down to the subsoil then your flags are never going to stay level.

We have already dug that out, and have it leveled

Your area is nearly 26 M2 .....so to cover in an inch(25mm) of sand you will need .0.65M3 (26 × 25mm). The one tonne bags of sand will only be around half a cubic metre in volume, so you might need two bags unless you can get away with doing job with only an 18mm depth.
