    Hi,

Had an unfortunate experience in my car recently, oil pump failure. Google tells me its a known issue on this engine and has been part of a recall on other types with the same engine.

I was on a narrow road when light came on so had to drive for another 500m to pull in. At that point the engine was starting to make a rattle noise and I shut it down immediately. Car was then towed to a garage where they are about to pull the sump to check the bearings and determine the level of damage caused to the engine (hopefully minimal). I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

Im hoping that Ill get away with replacing the pump, possibly the chain, inspecting and cleaning the big end bearings and putting it back on the road but to get my ducks in a row Ive been looking at engine replacement/recondition options.

Ive received a quote of 2.5k to recondition the existing engine by a well known engine specialist. Timeframe unknown.

I have received a quote of 1700 for a replacement engine from a newer version of my car with less mileage. The quote provider advertises on the well known classifieds and collects the car and returns it 4 days later with a 6 month warranty. It sounds like a good option but I am worried there is an element of scam about it. Mobile phone only, seems to operate a breaker yard, might never see the car again, not the engine I'm told I'm getting etc etc.

What would you do in this situation?

For info, car is a 2014 model with 80k miles, full service history.

Is this a vw/Audi 2.0 TDI engine by any chance.
If it is the quotes don't sound too bad.

2014 is a bit too new for the VAG oil pump issue i think, is it too new for an Insignia though?

If it's an Insignia I'd go with the refurb engine for the extra, a second hand unit is likely to fail on you down the line anyway, so you'd be buying another one shortly.

If it is an Insignia, I also wouldn't be expecting anything in the way of good news after a sump drop if it's been driven any distance, let alone 500 meters followed by a knocking noise.

2.2 Duratorq. Seemingly Land Rover recalled the Defender to replace the oil pumps. Ford didn't recall any. Internet is rife with premature oil pump failures on the engine.

Yeah Im in 2 minds to be honest over the best way to proceed. You don't know what you would inherit in the replacement.

Word of warning, I HAD an Insignia which has similar issues, Oil seal on the oil pump, my seal went, engine buggered, Paid nearly 3k to get fixed, car lasted little over 1 year and was in the garage nearly every month since. Personally, if the engine does not need a rebuild, then fix the problem and hopefully it will be ok, but a rebuild, I wouldn't do it again and I never heard any good stories about rebuilds. Get a replacement engine and get the pump issues fixed. That is what I should have done.
