    Hopefully someone can help,

Bought a car last month, around 20th May tax was out in May, still waiting on log book to be sent back so I can tax car.

Recieved a fine off the local council for non display of tax today..... €60. Just wondering seeing as i havent recieved the log book will the previous owner get fine issued to them, as car could still be in there name can i contest this? Its been over three week now since change of ownership .

If the purchase date was any date in May, you are liable for road tax from the 1st May

Thanks Mike , fully aware of that, the issue is the fine as im waiting for change of ownership, i cant actually tax the car.

I supose legally I am responsible for making sure car is roadworthy , just dont want previous owner being issued a fine

Nah, the previous owner won't get the fine once it's dated after the purchase date, but I totally get where you're coming from and unfortunately there won't be any point contesting it, as you're supposed to have the car taxed, or leave it in the drive.

Had same situation recently and just took it out as little as possible until the log book came back from Shannon, but 3 weeks is not right. I got 2 cars changed over the 5 or 6 weeks, and both were done within a week. Have you checked online to see if they even received the log book from the previous owner yet?

Try the car reg in here and see what the story is

Thanks Mike, may take it on the chin so.

Then definitely the seller hasn't returned the log book as there are no delays in processing change of ownership at the moment, other than a day or 2 from receipt of log book

Do nothing for the moment. If the Seller hasn't sent away the VLC then this might spur him on.
I'm assuming you saw (and signed) the VLC.
BTW, next time you buy a Car take a photo of both sides of the VLC with the seller watching. Even better, try to get them to come with you to the nearest postbox to send it off.
