Lumbar discectomy recovery L5S1

I had a discectomy/laminectomy on my l5s1 lumber disc approx 6 weeks ago. Im a bit concerned about my recovery progress so far so id welcome other people to share their experiences from similar surgery.

Initially I felt great after the surgery up until about 10-12days, I had been out and about 3 or 4 times a day walking up to 1.5km each time but then i started to get some mild nerve pain and soreness. My surgeon said this was normal and to continue to walk as much as i can.
However walking seems to aggrevate the nerve, I get a numb feeling across my left side and down the left leg after about 15minutes of walking. I now go for one walk for approx 15 - 20mins depending on how i feel along with just walking around the house or yard 2 or 3 times a day. The 3 times I tried to do more I have felt the numbness come on stronger followed by that nerve pain(not bad but hard to sleep later that night with), Id rest up the next day just walking around the house and the following day id be moreless pain free. I have reduced my pain medication and i feel i can reduce it again as long as i dont push the walking.

Im just a bit concerned as ive read some discectomy recovery guildlines online which suggests i should be able to walk for 30mins twice daily after 6wks. I had been managing my back issue for 6 years with physio and nurofen but it was getting worse so i opted for surgery. Ive read that the longer a person has had the nerve pain pre surgery the longer it will take those nerves to settle down after surgery which is keeping me positive.
