They look like death waiting to happen as far as I’m concerned.

Can't think of anything worse to be honest. Imagine having a shïte day at work only to come out and have to scoot home.

I could eat a whole one.

Everyone is giving out about the bad traffic. Same drivers that sit in their car alone every day of the week then give out about everything that reduces the amount of cars on the road.

Love em, cheap small eco friendly transport - what's not to like!

Using mine on rural roads seems piss people off no end too, I mean - full blown fire and fury, way worse than anything I ever experienced on a bicycle, I love it :D

Anyone have any links for good quality scooters, something for a short commute, at a decent price?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,933 ✭✭✭✭GBX

I dont own one. Considering getting one just to annoy people on it though.

Mine's a xiaomi, played VAT roulette on it from China, won the game too.

I'm not too sure about your motivation for buying one, but I watched someone whiz effortlessly along the quays yesterday, using a cycle lane, and envied them for not being stuck in traffic!

So, is the answer maybe to accommodate their use, by introducing something similar to cycle lanes?

The advantages would be almost stress free commuting for those using them, and less traffic congestion.

Think about cyclists using cycle lanes(properly) vs cyclists taking their own, and everyone else's lives at risk in heavy traffic.

Also, they'd be more environmentally friendly, so, what's not to like?

Fair enough, they're not suitable for everyone, everywhere, or every occasion, but where they are, properly legislated for and accommodated, they could have real benefits.

It's all about regulation to take advantage of the benefits, while dissuading the negative elements, much like everything else in life, surely?

Or just let them continue to use cycle lanes.

I’ve no idea why they bother people, they are no more annoying than cyclists and from a user perspective are a lot more attractive as there is no effort involved in moving around on one.

Maybe. The whole safety issue would have to be looked at, I think, in urban areas.

I don't think they'd work very well in a lot of rural areas - eg. Lack of adequate cycle lanes, poor maintenance where lanes do exist, many roads being too narrow to incorporate a cycle lane, etc. etc.

But, overall, they look like a lot less effort that bikes, and a lot more practical for people with limited mobility - I'm referring to people who may have trouble walking or cycling a long distance, obviously not people whose mobility issues would cause either safety issues using them, or excessive discomfort.

I'm sure there are plenty of issues I haven't thought of, but the point is - We should be having a discussion about how to facilitate the safe use of the things - not confiscating them...

Reason for hate? See above. The smugness is the most vitriol inducing part.

Bird are a like a Dublin Bikes thing but Scooters in the USA. But there are no stations and the scooters can be left anywhere. The owner of this account decided to destroy the scooters that are left in random locations.

Im not really considering buying one as I have a motorbike. But I agree with a lot of what you said.

    At least they're not scramblers.

That said, I wouldn't give them an hour lasting in scrambler country.

Or just let them continue to use cycle lanes.

I thought they were classed as illegal ?
Are they not considered motorized vehicles which are subject to tax, licence and insurance ?
I thought I read articles of people getting penalty points for being caught using them on the road ?

I see one regularly on the drive home with no safety helmet in the bike lane and a few dodgy maneuvers when overtaking a bus in the bus lane.

I wonder if it's more unstable for someone on a scooter to look behind them before changing lanes than on a bike?

Rented them in Tel Aviv the other week and they were amazing along the promenade. Virtually everyone uses them there.

Was in Wroclaw and there are a few companies that have Electric scooters. You tag on using your phone and a QR code on the scooter. Great for getting around on. Then you just hop off and log off when you reach your destination. Very handy, very easy to use and cheap as chips.

Got them over here in Brisbane. Great fun and a really nice way to travel. Have a drinky drink, travel along the river etc etc. Really are a great addition to the city.
