Irish car abroad involved in an accident

Not sure if this should be in Motors, Legal or other.
Looking for some [not legal] advice here.

A mate of mine was involved in a tip abroad. He lives abroad but was hit by an Irish registered car on the motorway in his home European country. Maybe €2k in damage. Maybe more.

The car stopped, saw that my mate was taking photos etc, then got back into the car and left the scene. They appeared to be speaking French or have French accent.

What's the best way to proceed?

I don't have many other details.
I don't know if the car has Irish insurance, foreign insurance, any insurance.
I don't know if the car is stolen, exported or on holidays.

Assuming [a big ask] everything is above board, what's the best way to proceed? Local police, Gardaí, other? Is there any way of finding out who the owner of the 03D black CLK belongs to?

Type it in to change of ownership on www.motortax.ie to see if there's been a recent ownership change...https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/changeOwnership.do

Check on nct.ie to see if the car has an NCT, will give an idea if it's a complete bandit car.

Not much use if the car crash was in a different country. Its safe to assume someone with insurance, NCT etc would have stopped. Leaving the crash means that they have none of the above.

Though I can't see a restriction on countries on the MIBI website

IMO best course of action would be to contact local police. Show them pictures, and make statement. They should provide with a report.

Then apply local motor insurance bureau (equivalent of Irish MIBI) and inform them that you were hit by foreign driver and driver run away. Provide reg number. And ideally police report.

Procedure with police report might vary between countries, but in general contacting local insurance bureau is the way to go in such cases, same as any Irish person would contact MIBI with registration of foreign car that did hit and run on them in Ireland.

Grand job. No change of owner in the past 3 months. NCT expired back in March. Pretty much confirmed my fears. Gonna advise my mate to walk away.

    Cheers.

why would they walk away? if there is a local version of the MIBI go through them.

I mean walk away from finding out who was driving. He told me last night that his liability is €300. It's a lot of hassle.

Contact local police with what info you have.
    Let them handle it.

It's worth reporting it in case the police find the car involved in other crime too.

Get your mate to report the hit and run to the local police authority, at least they will have the car reg input into the system.

And if he has photos, the driver might be identifiable.

It's only a side profile with a hoodie, sitting in the driver seat. Looks a right scrote.

Many people drive without NCTs when living abroad, mainly because the local coppers don't know what to check for.

Could actually have been the reason why he drove off, report it to local cops anyways

Funny that's exactly what I thought of when I read the opening post.

Maybe your friend might be better advised stay away from scrotes driving Irish cars abroad?
