VRT exemption question

I'm planning to move back to Ireland from the UK in the next few months (3 or 4 months maybe) and want to bring my car back and avoid paying VRT via the transfer of residence exemption.

The issue is my insurance in the UK is up at the end of the month so I would like to bring the car back before then to avoid having to renew the policy.

As an FYI, I have owned the car for 14 months in the UK and have an address in Ireland.

Is there any way possible to avoid the VRT on import without actually planning to move home for a few more months after the import date?

    Any advice is appreciated!

Renew your insurance and pay monthly until no longer needed?

You'll need to specify a date for your transfer of residence on the form and provide evidence of use in the UK up to that date, a ferry ticket plus documentary evidence of changing jobs, house etc. It all goes to Revenue for a decision.

I don't think it will work in advance of the date but you can I think transfer the car up to a few months after.

I'd just renew the insurance at your uk address and cancel it when you move back as that is one of the main things Revenue will look for. I also kept fuel receipts etc. in the UK.

If you look at the form it will give you an idea of the level of evidence they look for.

Yeah that's what I'm planning to do, would prefer to get it back to Ireland as early as possible though.
