    Hi folks,

I'm no grease monkey, but don't mind giving something a shot.
The belt on our 10 year old Qashqai (1.6 petrol) broke so got it towed back to my office.
I was told by the lad who towed it that it's fairly simple to replace on these cars and a new one should just 'slip on' - and a youtube video would help.
Is it worth having a crack, or should I call in expect help?
Anything i need to be wary of?

EDIT - Originally thought timing belt, but it's the auxiliary belt.
    thanks!

You will be extremely lucky if your engines valves and pistons haven't come into contact and wrecked your engine. Most newer engines are interference engines. I don't think this is a case of just putting on a new belt tbh

The 1.6 Petrol of that era is a timing chain. I would be inclined to let a mechanic at it if you’re not 100% sure on how to replace. As above, some damage could already have been done.

What mileage is on it OP?

Very low chance of DIY success IMO, even if it's a non interference engine.

    Ah damn.
    Just over 110k on it.

It’s barely broken in at that mileage. Mine’s still going strong at 355k. Definitely worth repairing.
I’d get a mech to check it out for damage and then if ok - new chain. If damaged beyond repair you’d pick up a replacement engine handy.

    Hope this helps

    thanks!

Are you sure it’s the timing belt that broke???... could have been the auxiliary belt... which would slip on DIY as per his description.

Sounds more likely all right. Aux belt is very handy to replace on this engine

Sorry! It's the aux belt! The one around the alternator and water pump!
    Sorry again!

Better for you though... may aswell have the mechanic slip it on. I dunno shouldn’t be much more than 40€ fitted I’d say.

Yeah, that video sure gave me confidence I could do it myself :)

I'll give it a shot and can always drive it down to the garage after for them to check it / ensure nothing else wrong.

    Think I've done it.
Tensioner wasn't adjusted as per video, but tried loosening close nut and that seems to have worked!
