Hey lads, googling this has my head done in. Getting different figures here all the time, going looking at a 318d msport this evening and I'm getting BHP figures of 120, 150, 134, 160... M47 Engine.

I know the 318 has a different camshaft, smaller injectors and a smaller map than a 320 which is 184BHP. Does the fact that it's an M-Sport mean anything when it comes to the figures or do I just need to go and drive it to find out what power it's making?

    Thanks.

Msport is the trim level, it's a sportier looking car than the SE model but has nothing to do with power output. It looks far better than SE in my opinion but will have a stiffer suspension making it a slightly harsher ride.
The 318d is basically a 320d in a lower state of tune and would have been brought in to come under a lower emissions target and a lower tax rate and hence be cheaper than a 320d, it will also have less BHP but I defo don't think its less than 150 BHP, there was a 316d too which was lower again.
If power isn't your thing I'd have no problem driving a 318d but the only thing is they were generally bought on a budget that couldn't stretch to a 320d back then and can be very sparsely specced without leather etc as a result ...

E90 318d with the M47 engine would be 122bhp, 320d with the M47 engine would be 163bhp. 318d with the N47 engine would be 143bhp, 320d with the N47 engine would be 177bhp. 320d has a larger turbo, injectors and intercooler.

316d only had 115bhp and only became available from 2009.

M Sport is a trim level and has no bearing on engine bhp. All the above were available in ES, SE and M Sport trim.

    Following up on this.

    Came from a 330e which can’t compare to either a 318/320d but also owned a mapped 320d a while back....which was quick.

The 318d is a heap of shiiite. Slow. No faster than a Hyundai 1.6diesel. Torque is there to be sure but my god it’s underwhelming. Think I’ll keep up the search for an e90/91 320d. The 318d was a HUUUUGE disappointment. Wow. This must hav been the “efficient dynamics” variant of its time... the msport variant I drove was very capiable on the road ands was solid out but my god...slow...Underwhelming.

Get a 320. There’s absolutely no reason for this car to exist.

Get the 320d the other ones are pathetic. People splashed out a ton on these cars and for a total irrelevance financially got a go cart!

I have seen so many msport 3 series that look fantastic only for it to drive past and be a 318d, every time I see them a wave of disappointment washes over me.
