Runner from a tropical climate. How to dress for Irish weather

    Hi all,

My OH, who is from a subtropical climate is developing an interest in running proper after managing a 68 minute 10km in the VHI women's mini with just treadmill training (and only six months after a serious hospitalization).

BUT she remains convinced that she'll develop octuple pneumonia from running in anything less than 25c. I'm convinced that there's a layering solution (she's quite tall and built more like a basketball player than a runner).

Has anyone else on here made a similar climate transition or just have General advice on what's the current state of play with running gear, which seems a lot more technologised than when I still had knees 10 years ago.

I prefer to overdress than under-dress, and feel like I should be living in a sub tropical climate!

There are more than pure running gear that she could run in. I often run in mountaineering style base layers in winter, with a proper breathable waterproof jacket as an outer layer. A hood on the jacket adds a huge amount of adjustabilty in terms of temperature control.

Some styles have more flexibility to adjust on the fly. I like half zip base layers for their adjust-ability. Nice and cosy zipped up, but can dump heat effectively zipped down. Similarly long sleeves can be rolled up.

waterproof running shoes can make a big difference to comfort and perception of coldness.
