    Hi all

I’d love some feedback on the VW Golf 1.2 petrol engine? I think earlier ones gave trouble with chains did they? Looking at a late 2013 one.
VW petrols generally good aren’t they if fond of a drop of oil

This comes up a fair bit. Are you looking at a Mk7 or a late reg'd Mk6?

The 1.2 chain engine in the Mk6 is a bit troublesome, the 1.2 belt engine in the Mk7 is by all accounts reasonably good.

I think it’s the mark 7 one? One that’s been replaced recently. I’d love to get feedback as they appear like a good alternative to an expensive petrol Civic or Auris

That's a Mk7. The 1.2 in those is generally fairly good, no major issues.

That particular car is a bit spartan though. The 3dr in white with the big wheels looks cool, but the car is a Trendline so the spec isn't great in general, Trendline is scare in the Mk7's, missing things that most had like ACC, dual climate, front fogs, MFSW and so forth that the rest of the line up had.

Ah didn’t cop it was a trendline - yes they are basic as fcuk I thought it was a Comfortline

I know this is over 4k more expensive than the one you are looking at but it's also 2 years younger, higher spec and the 1.4 TSi with cylinder deactivation is a much nicer engine. If you could stretch your budget it would be worth looking at.

Great thanks bazz! Im looking for my mother (still) and petrol decent small hatches are rare as hens teeth.
Is the older Opel astra still a poor competitor ? No doubt cheaper

The Astra wouldn't be a great car imo and prices reflect that. Petrol options are limited and most sold here were the non turbo 1.4 litre which is too weak as that car is too heavy. Most of the opposition were superior to it.

Yes the new sleeker model is probably still out of budget. She’d like those. The older one is too heavy and awkward alright.
