Bear in mind S that if you do buy and are in the EU you'll have to add on a fair chunk of change in import duty and the like.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

This is why I don't buy and ship watches from the US. Customs uses the Force when calaculating customs duty, VAT and other fee's.

I do get a little annoyed when I see the amount of tax that we pay in Ireland compared to the price in the US

Look at it the other way - it means that supporting local Irish businesses isn't as hard - they've had to add those import duties and VAT onto their pieces - if there's not much of a price difference between buying US/Japan/non-EU and adding on the import duties and buying from a local brick and mortar shop then my money goes to the local shop.

The prices in the US generally don't reflect their VAT (State level GST I believe) - which admittedly is around half to a quarter of our VAT rate but it's not just a watches thing - a few years ago it would be economically feasible to fly to NY for the weekend for a "free" holiday, buy a high end camera lens and come back to Ireland rather than buying local.

I think you missed my point :) I'm complaining about the fact the the taxes are so high in Ireland when buying goods. The difference between the price in the US and Ireland is due to tax, not that their local stores are run more efficiently.

If I can, I will shop local

I totally get that - and that's why I said that depending on you view things (high prices in Ireland, comparatively low prices in the US but once imported = high price anyway) it makes buying local easier.

On a high tax point in general I guess that's the price of having our services vs living in the US (lived there once - definitely preferred our social protection/health/taxation system compared to theirs).
