Strange smude/discoloration on screen

    Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone's come across anything similar.

Like the title says, I've noticed an area of my screen, when I'm watching films, that appears to be discoloured. It's difficult to explain, but it's only visible when the screen is displaying a white background. I have looked on the screen and on the projector glass and can't see anything immediately apparent that would be causing it. Both the screen and projector are quite new (3-4 months old) and I would say it's likely it's been there from the start. It's not very noticeable or indeed visible most of the time but once you start seeing it you can't help but notice it during very white scenes.

The area of discoloration is maybe 18 inches square, roughly. I'm not even sure it would be clear if I tried to take a photo of it.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks

Does the smudge seem to go in and out of focus on the screen when you adjust the focus ring on the projector ? if so, suspect a dust blob in/on the lens or optical block.

Good idea - I'll have a look at this - thanks.

It does seem the most likely explanation as there is nothing on the screen itself that would seem to be causing it.

I did give the lens a clean which didn't seem to make any difference - could the smudge be on the inside face of the lens and if so, is it very difficult to clean?

Without seeing it it’s impossibke to say - some projectors are more prone to dust than others, it’s also possible that there’s discoloration from degradation of the panels in the projector - this depends on the type of projector and I would be very surprised to see it after such a short time on a projector from a mainstream manufacturer unless the projector was subject to abuse.

Dust inside a projector can be tackled with compressed air but would require some dismantling, a diy approach to this will, no doubt, invalidate any warranty and in any event I wouldn’t encourage it unless you’re comfortable taking stuff apart and putting them back together again successfully. I’ve done this a fair few times but would use a service manual to make sure I knew how to proceed.
