I've owned my van 6months which was taxed already when I bought it. Received my renewal form however I can't seem to tax it online. There's no renewal pin on the letter and when I type the last 6digits in, it's still not letting me tax online :(. Anyone know why I can't tax this.

You will have to do it via post for the first tax. And possibly provide proof of commercial . There's a form for that and has to be stamped in the Garda station.

If you read the document I believe it states all of this on it.

It can also be done in person at a Tax office.

You will need an rf111a, weight docket if over 3500kg(,if I remember correctly) and your insurance certificate, not your disk

I needed weight docket for under 3500 kg, Ford focus van.

Presuming it's used for commercial reasons, in order to tax it for the first time you will need to,
Go to a Garda station, sign form RF.111a and have it stamped.
Van must have a current CVRT (d.o.e.) roadworthy certificate.
You must have your current insurance certificate showing insurance for commercial use.
Bring insurance cert and signed RF111a to your nearest motor tax office and you will get the disc.
After that, future renewals can be done on line.

Do you not need to produce a VAT number anymore?

Do you not need to produce a VAT number anymore?

    Never did in Dublin.
PPS was all that was required.

Confirmed on Thursday with a MTO staff member.

It's part of the RF.111a declaration..
Please read the following note before completing this declaration.
Article 3 of the Road Vehicles (Registration & Licensing) (Amendment) Regulations 1992
provides that a licensing authority must be satisfied that a vehicle is correctly taxed. In this
regard, in order to tax a vehicle at the goods rate all applicants must confirm that they are
registered for tax purposes as a business with the Revenue Commissioners by providing
    their Revenue Registration identity number.

You only need a weight docket if the van has never been taxed before.

'Revenue registration' number and PPS number are the same thing, just used in a different context. You DONT need a VAT number, and you DONT need a VAT number to have a business, or be self employed.

You simply get the form, it's very basic, you fill out using your vehicle registration number, your 'tax registration number' (which is your PPS number), the nature of your business, anything from an online shop selling snowflakes, to a multi million pound empire, your signature, date, and the Garda Stamp and signature... It's not that difficult to understand.

Your PPS Number is your revenue number for this process.
Remember, there are many sole traders registered but not registered for vat purposes.

Motor Tax Offices can look or seek additional documentation for the 1st time taxing of a light goods vehicle per Motor Tax Policy, Circular 4/2010.

See information below on Motor Tax section of DCC website. VAT Number or PPS Number is suffice to be entered in box on RF111A form.

    Additional requirements for Commercial Vehicles
We require more information about some vehicles in order to tax them.

Weight Dockets - On the first time taxing of a Heavy/Light goods vehicle you may be required to produce a weight docket. Please contact us to determine whether you need to submit a weight docket. If taxing an Articulated vehicle you must produce a weight docket.

Goods Only Declaration for Light Good Vehicles - You must complete this Declaration at a Garda Station if you are taxing the vehicle at the goods rate and the design gross vehicle weight of the vehicle does not exceed 3,500 kg. This applies to taxing a goods vehicle for the first time, on change of ownership or change of taxation class to goods.

When submitting a "Goods Only" Declaration form RF111A you must also submit your original motor insurance certificate confirming that you are insured for business use

Your vehicle needs a Certificate of Roadworthiness if your vehicle is 1 year old or more. To get a Certificate of Roadworthiness, follow these steps:

Have your vehicle tested by an authorised goods vehicle tester. View a list of authorised goods vehicle testers.
If the vehicle passes the test, get a Pass Statement from the tester.
    Applications by post
If you send your application by post, you do not need to buy a stamp. Just mark the envelope “Freepost”.
Post your application to Motor Tax Head Office(Blackhall Walk)

Please remember to enclose the following:

All the supporting documentation explained above.

    That’s normal then.
You won’t need it when taxing next year.

Must be different for every county. In mayo I was taxing a small van commercial which was never taxed before.

Needed a weight docket ( didn't need one on previous vans taxed before by someone else)

Needed an insurance cert that showed it was insured commercially. (I was allowed have social domestic and pleasure on it as well)

    Valid cvrt

Declaration stamped by a guard. (In and out in 5 mins)

Further evidence I was self employed. A vat number or notice of tax return or a letter from revenue stating I was self employed. ( I rang revenue and they posted s letter that day)

Then why repeat yourself... ad nauseam.

There is no need to 'get back on topic'... it's been done to death, on this and many other threads.
All you need is to fill out the form mentioned, and tax your vehicle accordingly. It's a straight forward process, it's been done for decades, and prior to the internet as well...!

Taxing online is more efficient and a better use of your time.
Its the way forward, hence only one MTO in Dublin now.

The OP is right in their thinking in how to avail of the online taxing process.
