Academy Award-winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale star in FORD v FERRARI, based on the remarkable true story of the visionary American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and the fearless British-born driver Ken Miles (Bale), who together battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford Motor Company and take on the dominating race cars of Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Anyone else find it weirdly jarring to hearing Bale speak in a (his?) UK accent? I'm so used to him putting on a Stateside drawl, it briefly made me go "wait, what?"...

All those traits seem like they'd go hand in hand with a great actor, no?

The title for Europe is Le Mans 66

Yeah got a shock yesterday when I saw that. Reckon Ford vs. Ferrari actually sounds better, it's about a dogfigt between two car companies, naming the movie after the race seems odd

Looks interesting, shame about the 2 leads.

Can't do Bale, massive prick & hugely overestimates his talents.

    Day-Lewis he isn't.

I can't wait to see Damon and Bale. Both seem perfect fits for the roles.
Hoping to see this in the cinema as I have a real thing for old cars. :)

Agree it seems odd to have changed the title for Europe. The story does seem more about the rivalry than the race itself.

Spoiler free, basically its great and Christian Bale steals the show

Have a suspicion this will be the stereotypical "plucky American underdog (and British friend) against moustache-twirling, filthy rich European" but hopefully not.

the gist I got is that its creators against corporations so sounds like it would be plucky underdogs clashing against Ford

Harsh on Bale! I mean massive prick yes, but the boy is talented indeed. Just sit down and watch Empire of the Sun again and you'll see. He has quite a few outstanding performances I would say. Daniel Day Lewis he ain't but he's head and shoulders above the various one speed actors that are loved like Gosling, Pitt et al.

This looks like capitalising on the acclaim for "Rush", I don't think there would have been an interest to do this story otherwise. The same rivalry pattern to the story, in the same setting, at roughly the same time period.

    Agree with alchemist33 as well.

Btw, Ryan Gosling blew me away with his performance in "The Believer". He was 20, giving a terrifically mature and nuanced performance, one of the best I've seen in a film dealing head on with a very unpleasant subject matter. About Pitt however - I can agree with that.

Saw it last night as part of the the Cork film festival.
It's good but not great. To be honest as racing movies go I preferred Rush. This movie didn't disappoint as such, but also didn't live up to the lofty expectations I had for it that the critics created by lavishing so much praise upon it.
Didn't think there was any need to create a pantomine villian for example as among some of things that didn't sit right with me.

The actual race was done very well even if there was some CGI used for it, but it really let's you get a feel of the atmosphere of the race, even though the tension of which manafactuer is going to emerge victorious is absent.
Decent performances from the cast as well, particularly the chemistry between Damon & Bale as Shelby and Miles respectively being the main focus of the film.

I think his has been rename as ''Le Mans 66''. Maybe the thread title should amended.

Was a great film. Will it win Oscars, no. Will you enjoy it, yes! Bale is great craic and Damon does a good job as Shelby. But in the cinema I saw it was called le mans also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,724 ✭✭✭seenitall

"Le Mans '66" for Europe, "Ford v Ferrari" for the American market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭santana75

Saw this tonight and its an absolute belter of a film. Loved every second of it. It gets stuck in right from the word go and never lets up. Theres not one moment were the pace sags. Its just a proper entertaining movie, and a really good family one at that. Why they felt the need to rename it le mans 66 in Europe is beyond me. But this is a minor gripe. Go see it, it'll restore your faith in movies and for my money its a lot better than Rush.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

its a great movie, one for the cinema screen, for a 2 and a half hour movie it didnt feel it. Jon Berthal and Catriona Balfe had good screen presence too. The movie was light enough on the under the bonnet stuff. hope it does well in the box office and sends a signal that audiences like good character driven movies

    You were right.

Just home and still an emotional wreck. This was just a brilliant film.

I saw this during the week. It was decent. Bale and Damon were very good. I wouldn't be in a rush to see it again though. I felt it dragged, especially in the middle of the movie. Could have done with being 20 - 30 minutes shorter.

I agree with a poster above that there was no need to create the panto villain. It felt contrived.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭otnomart

Brilliant movie: interesting true story, properly drawn characters, gripping action scenes and great actors.

Much better than Rush in my opinion.

Agree with above posters about the panto villain.

Would't rule out an Oscar for either lead or supporting Actor, either.
in my opinion Bale is a much better actor than Pitt, and Damon gives a strong performance here.

Read a fairly disappointing review for this in the Sunday Indo yesterday where the author penned that this was a 'penis measuring contest' with Damon laying on a thick accent. Thought it was a poorly balanced review in all honesty - the story is a brilliant one and despite the few 'Hollywood' moments, the performances by Bale and Damon were quite good - a quick youtube of the background would have provided proof that Damon did quite a good job in portraying Shelby

Well Shelby was an out and out Texan, something maybe that reviewer couldn't be arsed to look up

Loved the film myself, although some of the changes to story confused me a bit on first viewing
Miles not racing in 65 for instance.
But that's nit picky and something the average viewer wouldn't care about.

I wasn't expecting much when I saw it but really enjoyed.

    The ending
caught me out as I figured that the problems with the door would come back to haunt Ken. So once the race ended and they were all safe I thought that'd be it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,038 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

I'm glad I caught it today, but I had a bit of a gripe with
all the times Miles blew past his rivals just by going full throttle. Then again, the 1970 edition had just 7 finishers, and reliability was brought up many times, I'll let that slide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Gave this a watch as it had been on The List (TM) for a good while.

The review scores were high so I was expecting a decent film given I don't know a huge amount of the bits n pieces of cars or the ins and outs of going fast in them (Fast n Furious Film Watcher does not make me an expert I'm 99% sure 😁)

    and...

Yeah that was a pretty decent film. I didn't think I'd get over Bale with the English accent but I did. Followed along the story but I think one real piece of magic here was the Marco Beltrami sound track. It worked wonders during the races. They felt really exciting and nail biting! I associate Beltrami with 3:10 to Yuma so I was like.. Did Beltrami use some kind of Old-West film music styles or something to really pull the audience in there. No discredit to Bale and Damon, Bernthal andn Balfe (the wife) as well as the guy who played Ford (Tracy Letts) who all put in solid performances. The whole cast was solid throughout to be fair.

Would anyone like to say how it compares to the Le Mans movie with Steve McQueen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

very different style, hard to compare, FvF is more about the lead up to the race and the conflict between the designers v corporate Ford. Le Mans is more a pure petrol head movie.

I caught this on RTE during the week. Bale and Damon did some great acting. Bale especially, he is such a talent.

The story itself is riviting, both historically and in this movie.

    did it win any gongs?

    EDIT. awards for sound editing
