How to train as a plumber in Ireland

Hi everyone, just have a few questions regarding beginning a trade here in Ireland.

My relative is a young American living here in Ireland full time and is considering taking up a trade here. He is interested in welding, car mechanics, electrician, plumbing, boilermaker. I have heard that plumbers train in welding and boiler servicing too sometimes.

I don’t have too much experience of trades myself and don’t have many relations in a career like this. So, I’m not sure of ways to advise him how to start going about this. Do you do a course first before doing an apprenticeship? How would you go about achieving this? Are ETB/Training Course workers the best people to talk to in regards to this or who should he contact?

Any of you have any advice for a completely clueless individual such as myself? Thanks so much

He will need to start an apprenticeship.

He will need to get employment as to carry out certain phases....

Fas has changed names but pretty much the same process.

Pay is sh1t.... Until 4 years is done.

College, work, college, work etc etc...

    ...

Solas is the agency name which replaced Fas. There's a lot more info on apprenticeships here. http://www.apprenticeship.ie/en/SitePages/Home.aspx

Remember what the poster above says is true - the pay mightn't be great compared to other jobs - but it is an awful lot better to be paid while training for apprenticeships than it is for many other further education courses!

    Thanks punisher
Do you mean employment as part of the apprenticeship (as in getting paid during the apprenticeship)? The phases are the different "modules" of the training course?
Is 4 years the length of an apprenticeship? Also, there will be college classes while the apprenticeship is also ongoing?

Sorry for the multitude of questions, but thanks again for letting me know :)

Thanks a million for posting that link for me, that is so helpful.
And yes, I get what you mean about the paid apprenticeship, much better than the large college tuition fees :(
