This is a pity. I'm quite fond of Lyles old time Golden syrup.

Ive heard about this link but I wonder how strong it is. With things like smoking its clearly destrimental to skin because most smokers you meet look older than their age. But i know plenty of super healthy vegans etc who looks prematurely aged, with sunken cheeks because of how thin they are, and plenty of people with poor diets who are overweight who look fine for their age. Ive seen enough of both types of people to think the link is not all that strong

Anyway its important to appreciate that this 'ageing' effects of excessive refined sugar intake is not limited to the skin. More importantly, it ages all your organs prematurely, heart, brain, blood vessels. The aesthetics should be the least of our problems

Well now I am EVER so glad you do. It lead me to this.

The premise of the video is the packaging reflects the beliefs of British society for whom the old testament was more important in everyday life back then.

It became more about nostalgia for the Victorian period later.

'Out of the eater came something to eat.Out of the strong came something sweet.'

Abram Lyle was a deeply religious christian from a Presbyterian family.

Its really interesting. Relevant to advertising and packaging now.

I think such vegans are dishonest with what they actually eat they infact eat far less and maybe anorexic or orthorexic. And of course the vegan diet doesn't give you everything you need to supplement.

A lot of 'refined foods' like rice juices etc are fortified, in particular grains.

I think for refined sugar though the link is strong.

Just to be clear i don't mean naturally occurring sugars etc.

Sugar stops you absorbing certain vits ..particularly vitamin c.

It also causes cancer. excess sugar intake is linked to pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and liver cancer

So this is how I ended up getting out of bed to go to the kitchen and stare at a tin of Golden Syrup.

Lots of people (understandably) think the sugar in fruit is all fructose but many fruits can actually be high in sucrose too. Fruits such as Dates, Mangoes, Pineapples, Peaches etc and some high in Glucose, such as Grapes.

This is where they believe bringing Grapes into hospital came from and the idea that Lucozde was healthy.

About twenty years ago I went on what was called the SCD diet (the Specific Carbohydrate Diet) which attempted to limit all sugar intake to monosaccharide sugars (that meant getting sugar only from fruits high in Glucose and Fructose) and zero intake from disaccharide sugars (so no refined sugar or grains of any kind - including corn and potatoes).

Basically that meant a diet that consisted some high glucose fruits (not too much though) meat, fish, salads, coconut, avocado and nuts. Lasted about four years on it and it worked to reverse the particular health issues I had at the time. Indeed it appears to work for many people with a variety of ailments as the diet is still as popular today as ever. (despite the author not being around to promote it as she died a number of years ago now - although I think she'd be happy enough with this recent study).

The fruits paleolithic people ate have almost no resemblance to the fruit of today though (which is bred to have very high levels of sucrose) so a little goes a long way.

Wouldn't worry about a little refined sugar though. Personally I think eating too
much grain (wheat, rice, corn, potatoes) and processed vegetable oils (particularly when they've been heated to a very high temperature) are much more inflammatory. Was reading a study not so long ago that found these two things combined (high glycemic foods with heated processed vegetable oils) cause far more inflammation when consumed together than they do alone.

Which is quite a common food combo when you think about it. Probably the most common foods people binge out on are both high in fat & have a high glycemic load: Chips, Biscuits, Pizza, Kebabs, Fried Rice, Donuts etc and especially if all washed down with a high sugar beverage. These foods also are the ones which have the most opiate like affect on the brain too. No wonder they call it a food coma.

I'll be dead long before premature ageing gets me anyway.

Even Lucozade has changed: It's sweetened with aspartame now. I don't like the new taste, but more importantly, it's useless as a hypo cure.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to get any drink these days with just sugar as a sweetener. I used to drink Club Orange quite a bit and would avoid Diet Club Orange because of the artificial sweeteners but now both have them. Same with Fanta.

I'm hoping someone seen her (and took a photo) but earlier tonight (as I was walking into the IFI) I seen a well endowed girl, cleavage you'd see from 50 yards off, wearing a black dress that had (right below said cleavage): "Eat Pussy, Not Animals" written on it. I was so tempted to take a pic but she looked mean tbh, I thought she might do a McGregor and foot stamp my phone. Nice looking girl though tbf, I'd say she had lots of offers tonight to engage in her request... from guys pretending to be vegans no doubt.

Ray must have been shoveling the refined sugars into his gob.

Pete the sugar from honey even grape juice enters the blood stream in a whole different way and at a different rate than refined sugar does. And it doesn't destroy vitamins this has been tested in lab settings.

Obv a whole watermelon in one sitting is bad for you because too much of anything is bad for you. But fruit is nothing like candy.

And the whole fruit is getting sweeter thing has been debunked.

Candy? One for the Americanisms thread methinks..

I don't see how it could be. Fruit(and vegetables) we eat today in the majority of cases are a far cry from the wild varieties. Apples, grapes, bananas etc are quite unlike the original of the species. They're much higher in sugar for a start. Wild apples(if you can even find one) are smaller, tougher and more bitter. Wild banana is almost inedible as it's basically a container for seeds. Bite down on one of those and you'd barely have a tooth left in your head. "Seedless grapes" is an oxymoron considering the purpose of of them for the plant. Strawberries are much larger and sweeter. There are very few fruit or veg that haven't been selectively bred to be bigger and sweeter.

It's an easy answer, but it's a tad more complex than that.

Obviously sugar intake through consumption of whole pieces of fruit is associated with better health in moderate quanitities, but as for the actual sugar inside it being'healthier' than table sugar or others, dunno about that now, any sources to back that up? Most health care professionals advise against drinking fruit juice for instance

I think I'll wait for some more science backing this up.

No they don't ...not even my dentist/doctor in real life said that about fruit juice i asked because i heard it too.

People put it in magazines and. It obviously depends on the juice.

They said it depends on the quality of the fruit juice.

That has more to do with the amount of a particular fruit required to make the juice. You could consume the juice of 12-15 oranges in one sitting. No one would sit and eat 12 actual oranges though.

Then you also have to consider if sugar etc to added to the juice
