Exactly this, was wiping it with baby wipes and the amount of dirt coming off was horrible. However now its all tacky and probably needs further cleaning. Any suggestions on the best approach?
    Warm water with fairy liquid?

I think Google is your friend with regards to finding the best approach.

Magic sponge and a weak apc works great for me

Weak apc and a few microfiber cloths.

Don't use baby wipes or magic sponges on leather steering wheels. The "amount of dirt" you removed was probably mostly made up of black leather dye. Keep doing this and you'll notice your wheel fading in places.

My process (which I do every 3 months or so) as follows:

    1. Spray a terrycloth/facecloth with Gliptone liquid leather. Get it quite full but not soaking/dripping wet
    2. Let it sit on the steering wheel for 2 minutes
    3. Gently rub all over, don't scrub. Do this for another 2 minutes paying particular attention to the 10 and 2 spots
    4. Using kitchen paper soaked in water and rung lightly, wipe the whole steering wheel
    5. Dry off with a microfiber cloth.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 if necessary.
