Making a short film

There is not much chat going on in the Movie forums so I decided to post this here. I know people in after hours have fantastic and tasteful imaginations, not to mention extremely direct opinions :pac:

Would it be possible to make a short film with some basic camera equipment ? I have a Canon camera which shoots pretty good 4K. I think it may be possible to shoot a short 1 hour film with this and edit it on my laptop with some decent open source software.

If I were to do this, where would I go to find some people who would be prepared to make a voluntary contribution to a small film project ? I have some interesting ideas and would be interested in others peoples input to put some imagination into a project. The intention here would be to get it shown somewhere on a non profit basis if it were good enough.

Potentially doable or a pile of nonsense ?

Unsane (starring Clare Floy) was shot entirely using an iPhone 7, and I'm sure there have been a few others.

Want an actor? I don't mean to brag, but I've played Banquo in the Borrisokane Players performance of Macbeth.

Doable. And not nonsense. It's a hobby. Christopher Nolan's debut film was 70 minutes long, was shot over a year and cost $6,000.

As said you can shoot and edit on your phone these days.

A 1 hour film isn't a short film, do you know how long that would take?

Start really short under 5 minutes, and take it from there.

I played one of the hungry Foxes in Chicken Licken in 3rd class. I can work for scale but I would want to have 3% of the gross.

Depends on the genre... a lot of porn is free.

I would suggest getting a gimbal for it so we all don't get motion sickness watching it on a big screen. They don't cost that much.

Give us a synopsis on these "interesting ideas" OP?

I believe it starts with a repairman calling to the house of a lonely housewife.

Hmm. I've noticed a lot of appliances going on the blink since I started working longer days.

Maybe the missus is making short films with her spare time. She's always been a bit artsy.

    Close up of Lonely Housewife.

    Cut to Repairman
RM "I only deliver them, but . ...."

    Hohohoho :p

I was more focusing on a theme based on inner city violence. A hybrid between fact and fiction.

Be very careful with expensive film equipment when filming in cities.

The Fair City thugs don't play nice when they see upstarts like yourself encroaching on their territory.

(That could make for a unique film on your inner city violence!)

Improv, walk up up to the thugs with a hidden camera and shout "yer ma". Guaranteed Oscar.

Why is the repairman delivering pizza? I hope somebody got fired for that.

Fair play to ya, but I'd be loosing this inner city violence theme. That sort of craic is saturated to hell, too much of it about these days and its probably glorifying the fools up in it to carry on acting the violent maggot.

You should try looking into doing something about a rural Ireland folklore theme. Audience for everyone. The subject matter is all over the shop and on your doorstep. You'd have people involved in that sort of theme too who would gladly help you out for research or do interviews.

The Minahans vs the Butchs? I'm seeing a West Side Story type thing.

Those 70s funk tribute bands gotta eat too though. Don't expect them to work for free.
