Fireplace Options, Electric or Gas + Placement

Hi, I'm currently extending and rennovating a house. In the new sitting room there is no chimney but I would like to have a fireplace as a feature and for the off chance we need heat.

As there is no chimney, the fireplace can be placed on any wall and I am considering two, a plain block wall and a wall between a window and double doors to patio. Any advice on which would be best?

Also, I am unsure on what type of fire to install, electric or gas. For gas I could put in a balanced flue. I was thinking of an electric fire purely for effect as the heat from a fire should not be required to heat the room but do any of them look convincing or create atmosphere?

Any help would be great, the house is quite a big investment and I would like to get it right first time, if that's ever possible!
