sowed a small piece of garden today which was dug up recently where there was an old stone wall. Question how much proper clay would be needed I put down subsoil and covered with half inch of proper clay and sowed grass seed would half inch be enough to sow grass seed with subsoil underneath

It will work but never really thrive.
It will be prone to drought impact. Grass roots can reach down a few inches which makes it resistant.
