The Tasmanian Devil

This creature seems to demonstrate the wonders of natural selection/ adaptation in the way that its immune system seems to have build up a resistant to a facial tumour that threatened to wipe it out. Why can't this happen in humans, whereby t- cells that are rendered unable to fight agressive tumours, can't do it without being re-programmed to do so by scientists?

Is it that we would need to be facing extinction for something like this to happen naturally?

Also, the mole rat is another interesting creature. It seems to have an immunity from cancer.

    Turritopsis dohrnii (the immortal jellyfish)

Turritopsis dohrnii, the immortal jellyfish, is a species of small, biologically immortal jellyfish found in the Mediterranean Sea and in the waters of Japan. It is one of the few known cases of animals capable of reverting completely to a sexually immature, colonial stage after having reached sexual maturity as a solitary individual.

I like to get it over with as I need the rest of the time to service the female members of your whole family.

My oulfella traveled a lot before he got married and lived in Australia and Tasmania for a while back in the 50's and he had a pet Tasmanian devil. I suppose legalities weren't an issue then, or weren't enforced? I forget where he said he got him exactly, but I seem to recall he'd been hit by a car or some such.

He told me he was an affectionate oul thing and loved sitting on the da's lap getting his back scratched and would make all sorts of cooing noises while this was going on. He did say he could make a helluva racket in the evenings(I think they're nocturnal?) and was generally very vocal especially around feeding time. And he ate like something possessed. According to the da, he was a pretty good "pet". Could be left alone without wrecking the gaff, didn't wander off and was all excited to see the oul lad when he came in from work or whatever(could be a bit guard doggie with strangers though). Very clever apparently and would sit and "beg" for treats. He got a basket for him, but "Tazzie" preferred to sleep in a cupboard. As you do. Would go along in the car and sniff the air vents. :D

I do remember him telling me that Tazzie didn't live very long, I think three years. Just didn't wake up one morning. Broke the oul lads heart. But he was an adult when the da got him, so god knows how old he was. Somewhere I have or had pics of the two of them. I must dig them out.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

You would probably need to be on Boards for about 16-18 hours a day, in order to wait around and post up on all the new threads you're on. Kind of sad.

How would you know unless you're on boards 16-18 hours a day checking my activity?

    Kind of sad.

Wibbs, that's a great story about your father. It would be good to see those pictures. If you don't mind showing them.

Didn't 90% of them die before that ?
It's not really a good new story, just one that isn't totally terrible :(

    *sob* thylacine *sob* :(

The gene that makes Irish people more susceptible to cystic fibrosis also provides some protection from cholera.

90%+ of the people living in the Americas died when Europeans went there with their diseases. Measles was a childhood disease for previous generations here, in other parts of the world it's far more lethal.

It's also the reason why antibiotic use should be curtailed and people who don't finish a course should be quarantined until they do.
