    Hi all,

I went through the M4 toll yesterday, used my revolut card to pay the toll and the barrier opened. But I see today on my revolut account that the transaction was actually declined.

Will I get fined for this? should I ring up and pay the toll or is it their mess up?

    Thanks.

I know the pricing or am I missing something in that link?

No harm in ringing them. The bill usually multiples exponentially if you don't deal with it.

The same thing happened when I used Revolut on Ryanair to buy some snacks. The charge eventually went through after having been initially declined.

It's not your problem if you use a valid card under your name and the NRA lets you through the gates. Let NRA and Revolut discuss about the topic. You did nothing wrong and it's nothing to do with you.

That's not how it works. You have to pay the debt because you used the service. The fact that your card is declined does not let you avoid paying.

They accepted payment. The responsibility to chase up is on their side.

This is not the m50 with post fact billing so most of the advice here is useless

That's not how debts work. The OPs payment bounced most companies add changes when that happens.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm leaning towards just forgetting about it. Does the M4 toll plaza have NPR cameras?

Get a toll tag, keep the card in your pocket, and drive on.

You will never hear anything from the M4 toll if you dont pay.
Its actually possible to drive around the barrier on the very left.
I did it once a few years ago.

Just call them. For the sake of a few Euro is it really worth the potential hassle.

If it bounced, they wouldn't be let through

this is the toll companies problem

they paid, their system should have not let them through if the payment didn't work

Not with a pre pay debit card. Its possible that there was a pending transaction, not all shops process card transactions instantly, which looked like the OP had enough funds but came out before the toll attempted to process their transaction. Or the toll company could have delayed their transaction and the OP spent the money elsewhere.

But nothing changes the fact that the OP has a debt to pay and is ignoring it.

Decided to ring them and sort it for peace of mind, thanks all.

I didn't have to pay again they said it just takes a few days to go through with Revolut, so should go through today or Monday.

Just to reiterate, as already stated. It is your problem, not theirs. The debt incurred by you is not discharged just because you think it is.

what shops dont process transactions instantly

Not once has the above happened to me, if the debit card doesn't have money on it, it's declined

A follow up on this. I used a loaded Visa card for the toll barriers on the M4 and M6. The card had enough credit but it was never taken, I'd used it to buy from Amazon so it is valid. Called both and they don't process the card payments till late at night, the machine just sees a credit card number and lets you through, and the bank kept refusing their requests for money the card still has enough credit on it, had to pay with my credit card in the end. One did ask was it a Revolut card!
