I don't think I have ever read a book where the older detective wasn't a raging hard liquor drinking alcoholic

Stop reading “Hardboiled” detective novels so.

Back on topic, it bugs me that the “sly” or “sarcastic” character on radio ads always has a strong Dublin accent. As if all Dubs are “Del-Boy” types who’ll rip off or take the piss out of anyone they encounter.

The vifilcation of rodents in film. It is wrong. Highly intelligent, inquisitive, curious creatures, with not a single bad intentioned bone in their body

A rodent will never 'snitch' on you

    Agreed.

    Also cats.

And older men being portrayed as grumpy or old fashioned.

You should watch "A Touch of Cloth", it sends up a lot of those detective stereotypes. He has a set of bar optics in his car and all

Ratatouille? An American Tale? Fifle Goes West? Flushed Away?

    Very positive representations of rodents.

Why are the Russians always bad guys in films !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭farmerwifelet

That men find women who can't bake or paint without getting flour/paint on their face so sexy!
That someone only realises who the love of their life is when they are marrying someone else and the proceeds to wreck their wedding and their love gratefully runs away with them instead of punching them!!
Also if your wife and child are murdered/kidnapped it's perfectly fine to go on a murderous rampage and cause multiple car pile up injuring/killing innocent people as you get revenge and the police will just shake your hand at the end and let you stroll off into the sunset.

I think I almost fell for some of them.

We always think the Brits are smarter than us!

Some Irish stereotypes are cool though :P

The quiet, nerdy girl with the glasses and the frumpy clothes.

Takes of glasses, puts on nice dress and gives her hair a bit of a comb.... Hey presto and she's a supermodel.

As someone who writes for a living, the portrayal of journalists really annoys me! They will spend weeks or months just doing one article - how is this cost effective?

Amy Schumer's character in Trainwreck is a prime example of this. She is told by her boss to write a profile of a sports doctor and manages to have an entire relationship with him in the time she's allotted to write the piece (not to mention that it's ethically dubious to get involved with someone you're meant to be writing objectively about) and doesn't appear to work on any other articles in that time. When she's interviewing him she doesn't take any notes, nor does she record what he's saying

Hi! I'm a college professor in a movie. I finish all my lectures with a snappy, compelling concluding line, and as the students gather up their papers I tell them not to forget the assignment that is due in on Friday!

Hi! I'm a theologian in a movie. I work at the Vatican, or in a very old monastery. When the protagonist of the movie comes to visit me I take him into a musty room, the door to which is opened with an impressively large key, and I show him something written in Latin in a very big, leather-bound book.

Hi, I'm a black cop in a movie. I am the sidekick to a white cop. There is an even chance that I will be killed in reel two, but this rises to nearly 100% if at any stage I have mentioned my impending retirement (if I am old) or my fiancee (if I am young).

Hi! I'm a computer programmer in a movie. I can do absolutely anything in six lines of code or less. My code always runs perfectly the first time. I can find bugs in code simply by reading the code on-screen. All programming languages are at my command. I can break into any system in seconds.

Oh, and as a sideline when not coding, I can enhance any image to any resolution with perfect clarity.

Hi! I am an Australian man in a movie. I either:

    (a) . . . wear a bush shirt and shorts, carry an improbably large knife, and can fix a broken jeep that is caught in rising floodwaters, or

    (b) . . . am an extremely good-looking surfer.

And the image never changes colour slightly when printed or on a diff machine and this is possible without printing out color separations and adding specs.

You never hear of common added software like lighbox or photoshop for enhanced image resolution to make it easier. For some reason this guy wants to enhance the image resolution in python. Why we never learn, but this guy uses python for everything yet it never seems to take long and he gets everything right first time.

Everyone has to learn python if they sit at a computer in this office.

Hi! I am a not-slender young woman in a movie. I am the protagonist's loud, sassy best friend, and the protagonist is a slender young woman. I am always there for her because, not being slender, I have no life of my own, and certainly no romantic relationships.

Also women are always wandering around their houses in matching lingerie.

    Until the plumber arrives.

How about the IT hacker who can hack any system or database in seconds to find out what you had for lunch and what hat you were wearing.
