    Hi,
What should I put on my silage fields after been cut.
I have no slurry to spread on them. None got out either
I dont have a soil test done.

Put 4 bags per acre of 15-3-20 +s in March

Fields will be set for Silage again.

I've gone with a bag of 10 10 20 and a bag of 24 2.5 10 on second cut, it will get topped up in 2 weeks with another 2 bags of 24 2.5 10. It will be cut by the 25th of June hopefully.
It got 3 bags of 0 7 30 for the first cut, yielded 10 bales per acre
Its low index ground, low 1s to be honest. The fert is definitely worth it!

I'd go with grass2milks idea here, and split the nitrogen. What if rain doesn't come.... Around here horsing out 80units in say mid June for a normal 2nd cut is considered a pure lottery and large chance it will be a pure waste if its a dry summer. Its been an exceptionally dry May in many parts of the country and not much rain forecast moving forward yet.

I was down in the Beef dairy event in Johns town Castle and was talking to one of the teagasc lads there and he told me I would need 80-20-60,
but what way to get that mix he said work it out!
My take on it would be

    1 bag can 27
    3 bags 18-6-12
    per Acre

Or you think he was talking out his Arse?

I’d be going with 4 bags 18 6 12 w sulphur, keep it simple, soil test in the autumn and build up the fertility with dung or 0 10 20/0 7 30 as needed. If it’s permanent silage ground it’ll need lots of it

Has it been reseeded lately, won’t need as much nitrogen if not

4 bags of whatever / acre for second cut silage is uneconomical

    Costs
    4 * €18 = €72
    8 bales/acre * €13.50 = €108

Total €180 or €22.50 per bale

Second crop silage only pays if you have your own slurry and can drastically reduce the amount of bag fertilizer

How much could you reasonably expect a bale to see for?

Can’t see 8 bales per acre on second cut unless it’s newl reseeded (or very small bales).

Much of price difference for ye going straights like mop or dap vs blends as if wondering if the mix in a blend could be like meal from a large blender full of crap that in theory works but stuff like Triple Super Phosphate causes 1/3 to be lost as soon as it hits the ground. Would also be concerned of a spread pattern with 3 or 4 components?

Little choice if he doesn’t have slurry. Mightn’t seem economical but better to bale your own than buy lucky bags, at least he’ll know what’s in them.
Tried pig slurry and topped up with can here a few times for second cut, wasnt overly impressed with the growth for silage but good grazing for the rest of the year

Any pig farm close will give you slurry But you need to go high on the P and K afterwards.
Otherwise look for a heavily stocked farmer who could be looking to export slurry.

You do well to find any silage for sale at 22.50 a bale
Often got 10 bales per acre on second cut if conditions are right, obviously that silage only suitable for dry cows

Never liked pig slurry for silage , high N was an issue in the crop.
