Career Change Advice - 50 years old

    Hello

I have been talking to a relative who is turning 50 and disillusioned with their current role. They have worked in a manufacturing setting for over 20 years and have reached a place where they are vital to the day to day running of the firm but treated poorly in both salary and recognition.

I think they would be fantastic working with people, something like a postman or delivery driver/courier etc.

What advice would you give to this person? I think they have standard leaving cert qualification but nothing 3rd level.

    Thanks in advance.

Have they tried talking to their employer to see if the poor salary and recognition can be fixed?

I am a fan of people changing careers, but at 50 there will be some age discrimination, and a lack of qualifications is a problem.

I think the employer can't afford to pay much more than they currently do so it is a tricky situation.

Do they have kids? Do they have savings?

Are they actually unhappy, or just wish they could get more cash / more recognition?

    The grass isn't always greener.

If he leaves and then realises "oh ****, what have I done", could he go back?

2 kids (both teenagers) and i would imagine a small amount of savings.

I wouldn't be confident that they would get back into the job if they realised they had made a mistake in leaving tbh

Postman is a good job, quite well paid, but a lot physically tougher than you would think.

I’m 43 and about to change career. Dropping 60% in salary and going back to college part time for 2 years. Can I afford it, am I 100% sure the change will work out? No but it’s worth a shot, one life one opportunity no point regretting what if...

Look into it..get career advice look at the numbers

Would they not just apply for a job as a delivery driver or the like, if they are looking for a guarantee that they are not making a mistake no on can tell them that.
