Blind heifer

    Hi
    We have a blind heifer here about 18 months old. Does anyone here have any experience with these. Would there be any trouble with the factory taking her?

    Once she's mobile and otherwise uninjured I don't see why getting her slaughtered should pose a problem. Handling blind stock can be challenging particularly in unfamiliar environments as they can quickly become disoriented and injure themselves or other's. If you could have a few other cattle accompanying her it should help minimize the stress of strange surroundings. Once she's suitably fleshed and you've come to an agreement with a factory it should be straight forward although it would be wise to inform everyone involved that she's blind particularly to reduce the risk of accident's.

    Would they be any problems with the meat then if she was stressed? What age would you recommend to keep her until.

    Stress makes the meat darker and tougher or so I'm informed, I think the industry term is "dark cutter's" but it's not something I'm that familiar with. Once she's handled suitably it shouldn't be a major problem imo. I wouldn't be working to a set age as such, once she's suitably fleshed ​it's time to move her on and probably the sooner the better. We're approaching the summer peak beef price and the best time of year to fatten stock economically so anytime from now on. I think you said she's 18 months so she should be suitable for finishing in the near future. I'd keep her on good grass and perhaps some meal for 6- 8 weeks and hang her up although there's other lads here more knowledgeable on the best way to fatten her than me.
