Not 100% how to find a new job

    Hi

I'm a Software Developer based in Dublin with < 1-year experience. I was let go in March due to cuts in the company. My tech skills are PHP and JavaScript.

I've been looking for a new job ever since, and it's proving difficult. I've had one interview for a role, which I didn't get. I'm struggling to even find suitable adverts on the job boards.

I've been in contact with recruiters. One got me the aforementioned job interview, and another is in the process of setting one up.

Does anyone have any advice on keywords and sites I should use to find relevant jobs?

Job boards are next to useless these days. Speak to a recruiter (not me I'm not in IT :pac: ) and they will guide you along. You'll be told here we're all evil but we're really not.

Make sure and keep up contact with classmates and friends in the business.

Serious number of jobs are filled by referral and networking.

OP - setup alerts on Indeed and LinkedIn and make sure you have a great LinkedIn profile. There's also a setting on LinkedIn which marks you as open / looking for opportunities to recruiters, very handy IMO.

Brian's post above yours explains why. Employers would much rather work with referrals than applications through jobs boards

How old are you? Have you experience in other fields or was that your first job? If the latter you will be coming up against the graduates now given the time of year it is.

You had better ring a few agencies and go in and have a sit down with them, go over your CV with a fine tooth comb and apply for every job going. There has to be something wrong if you're getting so little traction. You're not over pricing yourself are you?

As above; turn on the "looking for jobs" in Linkedin, and make sure you whore yourself out correctly.

Check your contacts/family to see does anyone work in HR, and have them look at your CV; it may just suck badly.

    1. Google "jobs in Dublin" and open the first 10 results.

    2. On each job website, search for your skills.

    3. Apply to whichever jobs you're interested in. Write a tailored cover letter for each job (sell yourself; in a nutshell, why you're a good match for the job) and attach your CV.

It takes a little bit of effort, but it will work.

    Hey mate,

I’m a dev, 6 years experience so bit more then you but hopefully I can give you some good advice (reasonably the same stack as well I do a lot of PHP/JavaScript).

Build up your LinkedIn profile for one - add all your languages/skills - if you can get friends to confirm your skill base. On LinkedIn as well you can put any certificates you’ve got - e.g if you’ve done any online courses or anything really.

Do you just do regular php and JavaScript? or do you use any frameworks? e.g Laravel/Angular - their is a large demand for these at the moment

Insure to outline projects or achievements in LinkedIn too

But also check out graduate programs they are all interviewing for them not. And it's not necessarily 100% student focused can be people like yourself with few months experience.

I just put "PHP Web Developer" in Dublin into LinkedIn Jobs and got 120 results. Surely there are a number of roles here you can apply for?

Not sure how widely used PHP is anymore though.. Outside of WordPress at least.

Maybe spend some time contributing to Open Source projects on GitHub so you have something to show recruiters. Better yet if you have any of your own projects to show off that would probably look even better.

You could also use this as an opportunity to brush up on other related skills that potential recruiters will be looking for.. Different JS libraries, WordPress Theme Development, etc.. Read job descriptions and note the 'extra' stuff they want which you don't have, and learn those.

Not sure how likely you are to find a software development graduate program. I don't recall seeing mich of anything like that when I graduated.

PHP is still quite popular, I’d lean more towards JavaScript however. Forget WordPress - Laravel is a good one to learn, currently in terms of job specs anyway.

Definitely agree to working on your own projects :)

I'm 23. This was my first full-time job. In the past, I've worked in construction and landscaping, but that was just during the summer, while I was in college.

I've been onto a few agencies this week, and they have bee helpful. I'm looking for about 32K

I use Laravel (that was the main framework in my last job). I've also taught myself Angular recently. I can do enough to consume my PHP JSON based apis.

I'm only getting 16 results when searching for that term on Linkedin.

    https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/search/?keywords=php%20web%20developer&location=Dublin%2C%20Leinster%2C%20Ireland&locationId=PLACES.ie.1-8-22

I'm teaching myself Node atm, but I'm looking for a PHP job to earn money while I upskill
