This is probably the best place to chance my arm with this, but I live in a suburb and since about late January there has been a blackbird(s) singing their little hearts out with the same song over and over again from about 4 in the morning, and as Im a light sleeper its driving me a bit mad. I have sleeping ear plugs which are a huge help but obviously Im not sure about them long term either.

Any ideas on if theres anything I can do here? Deflection techniques? Anyone in the know tell me if the birds will eventually head off? Is it mating season or something?

Yes, breeding season. Territories are being marked and mates sought. It will ease up when all that is firmly established. Assuming he has found a mate, it should settle down in mid to late June.

Streetlights will often trick the blackbirds into being active for longer also. But they are just marking their territory by shouting at any rival males to keep off their parch.

Still it could be worse. You could have this as an earworm.

Thanks for that, thought it might have been something along the lines of mating season alright. During the day its not a problem but lying in bed at half 4 in the morning listening to this guy is a pain for a light sleeper.

Try and see if he is singing from the same perch all the time.
If its a particular branch on a tree, maybe you could cut it, and he'd just find another spot elsewhere.

Ya Iv been using earplugs all along and they are a big help, huge help actually, but curiosity about why the birds are singing the same song over and over was getting to me.

    Thanks for the replies.
