As the title says what do you good folk consider to be the a fairly cheap and half decent box that can be used to record FTA channels? My daughter has left Sky and while she doesnt miss their content she does miss the ability to record the soaps mostly. She doesnt even mind recording on to a usb stick so a hard drive isnt important. Likewise Saorview isnt important either.

    All suggestions welcome :)

Can't beat an enigma2 box, little bit of setting up but work brilliantly after, looks great and easy to use with the sky skin.

Any second generation humax box would be fine. Or look at this very cheap one

If the sky set up was Sky Q the Lnb will need changing to the standard type.

Probably just over her budget Id think. She had been using a h2s and recording to a usb stick including series link but she did something with it (updating/rebooting or both) and it wont go past the rebooting stage now. Neither of us have a clue as to how you would even attempt to sort it out

I think that box would be well beyond what she would want to spend but thanks for posting though. As posted above, she was using a zgemme box up to a couple of days ago. Its been a while since she left Sky where she had the standard Sky+ HD box so the h2s did her job fine for a while as it was just the FTA channels she was recording.

Just when I seen the link posted by chrisire I did a quick search on Ebay and came across this little box. I know its not top of the range but would something like that be worth considering as its well within her budget?

If you are in Dublin and can drop it in to me i have no problem fixing the h2s,only take about 20 minutes foc,or i can talk you through it over the phone, not very difficult.

Or a second hand first generation Humax HDR and some apps,

    It's a slow box.

Unbelievably slow , like minutes to respond , if you have too many recordings. Hint delete recordings if the menu becomes unresponsive.

Idiot proof FreeSat EPG and channel updates. OAP's may find they can't enter the 3 digit channel code fast enough, but you can click on List.

Stupidly flexible. Web management , unencrypted HD recordings, remote timers.

Take a look at this . You can Series Link multiple Shows on Saorview and replete Timer Record on Satellite. https://www.powerpointappliances.ie/pages/saorview-connect-1

Thanks for the suggestion but that seems to be the Saorview connect box which costs €449 to install and Im not even sure if that covers the cost of the box. The daughter is just looking for a simple satellite receiver with an option to record, (preferably series link) to a usb stick. I think she's talking along the lines of maybe up to €50 max budget.
