RCS Messaging & Universal Profile - rich messaging for Android

    Has there been any update from Irish mobile phone companies about their plans (or lack thereof) for supporting the RCS messaging services being developed primarily for Android by GSMA and Google?

    It's basically a service that aims to give Android some of the functionality of iMessage - universal, rich instant messaging and file exchange and so on between all supporting phones.

    The only downside is it's heavily dependent on mobilecarriers and like SMS and MMS isn't really very secure or private, whereas iMessage and other proprietary systems are robustly encrypted.

    That aside, it would be a major improvement on SMS, if it were universally supported and it's surprising that I'm hearing no noise about it from Irish operators. Vodafone launched it back in 2017 but then seem to have made no fuss about it since and it's a bit of a lame duck if it's not supported by other networks.

    I'm just wondering have the carriers given up and are just going to let WhatsApp takeover the entire IM market other than on iPhone?

    whatsapp etc popularity means that it's pointless at this stage

    It's a shame as I wouldn't trust Facebook as far as I could throw them and WhatsApp is free of charge so they have to be planning to monetize it somehow.

    Yes but too late now.

    The MNOs missed the boat completely here and due to network effects the day is gone to make a comeback

    The phone operators screwed up the mobile internet so badly that the over the top players like Google, apple and Facebook Had it there for the taking.
