Hi I am thinking of investing in perennials for summer colour this year instead of paying a fortune on annuals for my pots.

Best suggestions please for good colour?

    Thank you.

Japanese Anemoes are a no no for me in open ground but grand for a pot ( White one is nice ) put a Rubeckia in there with it, nice late summer contrast. Aster, Pholx, Sea thrift, Hostas are others that spring to mind. Seek out a specialist nursery with perennials and get creative.

Agapanthus also actively like being in a pot with crowded roots. Snapdragons are bought as annuals but will self seed and also continue for a couple of seasons so they keep going - and are nice and colourful. Vinca is nice in a pot too, shows off the flowers better than on the ground. Alliums. Double daisies do well though not reliable in hard frost - in fact many of the daisy family would be worth trying.

when I came here the only very neglected garden survivors were big marguerites in containers and elsewhere.

Marigolds will last several years and do well in containers. Mine have given colour very early in the year.
