I have an ongoing one that I've been doing for a few years that nobody has picked up on yet. I only get to do it once or twice a year as it's a tricky one to work into most threads without it looking forced and giving the game away. I won't say any more on it.

The standard of trolling here isn't great though and I don't think it ever has. Off the top of my head, there's only one in here that I can think of to whom I would tip my hat whenever he comes out from under the bridge. Most of the others who try to troll are little more than silly wind-up merchants - the equivalent of a graffiti artists who just scrawls "Cock" with a sharpie on their bedroom wall.

Used to troll goth/pagan/atheist/vegan/hunting/body building message boards routinely back in the day (early 2000s). Great fun and I was a true legend on some boards. Multiple accounts, setting established members off on one another, sowing seeds of malcontent, undermining everyone and everything philosophically. Good days, before the word troll was hijacked by liberal rags like the guardian to mean nothing more than being abusive.

Used to love trolling the philosophical society in college. It was so easy, go into the general chat section and start posting my well formed opinions on wresting (taken from other sites)... Half the people used demonise me for posting about 'fake wresting' and the other half used fight for my right to express myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 671 ✭✭✭Plopsu

There's a fair argument to made that if someone CAN be trolled, the SHOULD be trolled.

I like a bit of trolling when I'm fishing large lakes for predatory fish such as a trout or pike.

It's a good way to learn an area using the echo sounder and gps and find out if there are any fish present.

Winding people up for your own amusement? Can’t say I get why one would do that.

Trolling has a bad reputation, it can actually be very funny if done with some care. Most people think of trolling as extreme cases such as harassment, but mild forms of trolling, such as that which is permitted in AH for example, can actually be very amusing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 139 ✭✭KerryGoat

I agree with OP in the sense it's bang out of order generally, but I wouldn't be opposed to trolling tolls or trolling people who spew pure hate and bile on the internet either.

It can turn nasty at times. Research the likes of Chris 'the Hacker' Peron and Frank 'Duncan' Garrett.

These men were trolled for yrs. In Peron's case he lost his business and ended up on the streets. Frank Garrett was hounded with pranks calls until his death from a stroke in 2011. He was an elderly Pole barn contractor from rural Oklahoma.

His foul mouth, heavy okie accent and legendary displays of anger made him an international superstar in the prank calling community. People phoned him from all over the world and chapters of 'Duncanism' sprung up everywhere, including Ireland. His soundboard is still heavily in use today.

The man single handily put Stilwell, OK on the map. However Frank never asked for or wanted his fame and refused to accept any sort of gifts or financial remuneration sent by the The World Prank Calling Council. The WPCC eventually attempted to stop the calls but his number was all over the net and the old goat refused to change it.

    The poor man was tormented.

Meta trolling, nice. I tip my hat.

I wonder how many people went through your posts trying to find trolling that probably isn't there!

People sometimes accuse me I'm trolling, failing to quite appreciate the difference between careful trolling and just being really annoying.

Im shocked at the amount of knobs who troll Donald Trump on twitter.
I know one guy who is absolutely obsessed with anything to do with trump, and the spa is accusing Trump of whatever, tweeting insults.

He's so in love with trump he was in Newyork for a weekend and wasted 3 hours to gwt to a building with Trump written on the outside and stood there and gave the bird in a photo...

Actually this guy looks like a trool himself

Not trolling as such but I've created fake dating profiles as experiments.

Plot spolier: if you're male and don't have model tier looks then don't bother with these sites.

That would be catfishing; it’s how I met my wife she said I was better looking in real life but seemed to have lost a little muscle.

I didn't catfish anyone, even though with my good looking guy profile I had young women CONSTANTLY messaging me.

Then stick with it, see what becomes of it. You know a little ghosting wouldn’t go astray either to find out if they’re a keeper

Tbh when myself and the wife did finally meet it was more like I fell into a state of catastrophic atrophy in comparison but then it all worked out.

Most people really can't differentiate between being a complete tool and a troll.

My son posted on some FB site (in the comments) the full storyline of Avengers endgame, i pulled him up on it and asked him wtf he was doing, he said he was trolling and learnt from a master (me), told him he was being a complete dick

My best ever troll was on a mate back in Wales, he mentioned on his FB that he had seen a band called Cinderella at The Tivoli in Buckley in the late 80's, i told him that they had never ever played that venue (they had cos i was there), this went back and forth and in the end he got so mad he spent hours going up to his attic to find a few hundred copies of Kerrang magazine, he then spent another few hours going through each one trying to find the gig listing.

Poor fcuker was up all night trying to prove me wrong, i slept so well that night too

I did something similar on a fishing forum years ago.
Said I hooked a porbeagle shark off the rocks in Clare and seen some cruising around the surface a few hundred yards out.

I was tope fishing and caught a 30 lbs tope and posted the photo, the tope was real alright.

But the porgie was a porky.

A few days later around 7 lads from Galway drove down and fished for hours, the only thing the caught was a dogfish.

I never told them I lied
