Temporary car insurance in the US

Myself and my family are heading to the US in July for a three week holiday. We have relatives in the US and they have offered us the use of a car for the duration.

Does anyone know how we would go about insuring the car for the holiday and roughly what the cost would be?

The admin. involved in taking out a new policy for a holiday would push the costs through the roof, your only realistic option is to get added as additional driver(s) to your hosts' policy. So ask them to check.

Not just be easier to rent a car over there? No Irish based insurer will cover you to drive outside of the EU.

Don't they have a policy on the car, which would already cover you?
