1 months notice = 4 weeks?

    Hi

    When giving one months notice, how exactly does it work?

    E.g. if you give your 1 months notice on the 20th of the month, does that mean that your finishing date is the 20th of the following month?

    Or

    Is 1 months notice 4 calendar weeks?

    I was looking there and depending on when you hand in your notice and when the same date falls on the next calendar month, you could end up having to work 5 weeks notice, which seems a lot? (For an ordinary basic job).

    Any time I've handed in my notice its been 4 weeks , but have been a bit flexible depending on the job (hand my notice in on a thursday for example but the 4 weeks would start from the following Monday).

    Also sometimes the 4 weeks would also be shortened due to holidays owed.

    Any contract where I have had a month's notice period, it was always a month i.e. hand in notice on 20th april, finish on 20th may.

    A month is a month.

    If your boss wants you gone he'll be happy with 4 weeks. If he needs you he'll want the month.

    Eh, it's only meaningless when you take my quote out of context like that.

    The next line clarifies:
    If your boss wants you gone he'll be happy with 4 weeks. If he needs you he'll want the month.

    But a month is a month.

    If you resign on May 9 (tomorrow) the employer can tell you to stay a month until June 8.

    So what it really comes down to is does the employer want to get every last drop of work out of you, or does he want you gone, therefore will be happy to accept 4 weeks as a month.

    Month means a period starting on one day in a calendar month and ending on the numerically corresponding day in the next calendar month, except that: (a) (subject to paragraph (c) below) if the numerically corresponding day is not a Business Day, that period shall end on the next Business Day in that calendar month in which that period is to end if there is one, or if there is not, on the immediately preceding Business Day; (b) if there is no numerically corresponding day in the calendar month in which that period is to end, that period shall end on the last Business Day in that calendar month; and (c) if an Interest Period begins on the last Business Day of a calendar month, that Interest Period shall end on the last Business Day in the calendar month in which that Interest Period is to end. The above rules will only apply to the last Month of any period.

    Pretty clear.

    It's very rare an employer will actually care about the couple of days either way. If you care then just tell them your end date when handing in your notice, say "X date will be my last day". It's extremely unlikely anyone will come back and say actually that's not exactly a month.

    Months notice is 30 or 31 days if not resigning in February.

    Have seen former employers\managers use the giving four weeks as an excuse to stick the boot in down the line if used as a referee for a subsequent role.
    "Ah he/she wasn't really committed to the job, even left before the notice period was up".

    Try and leave on good terms as best you can.
    It's only an extra two to three days and if current employer looks to shorten the notice period with holidays, all the better.
