Robins

    Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed a big increase in the number of robins in their locality?

In my location near Dublin Airport I have never seen so many as I have in the last 2 years.

I have seen 6 different robins in and out of the garden so far just today. I don't think i've been doing anything to make it attractive for them

It's not just my garden - I have seen them in lots of places.

As an aside I love them, they are beautiful birds and quite brave in how tame they are!

Is there any reason for this or is it just a natural cycle?

Robin's are territorial so you shouldn't really be seeing loads in one place. Its possible if several territories converge in one spot you'd see a few. I do wonder if the series of mild winters we've had in recent years has meant more songbirds in general survive their first winter and boost populations?

As Half-cocked said, you're probably not seeing as many Robins in the same garden as you think you are. What makes you think they're different birds, out of interest?

Many songbird species took a hit last year with the Beast from the East, but if I was to guess I'd say last years weather allowed for successful breeding for many of them so they would have recouped their losses there. This winter was very mild too, so likely very high survival rates. Robins are one of those species that are almost 'suberabundant' i.e. there's so many of them, that even in a bad year the difference in numbers might not be immediately obvious. Certainly in the Countryside and Irish Garden bird surveys they don't change much year to year (though the two consecutive cold winters in 2009/10 and 2010/11 did dent their numbers for sure!).

But I'd say its a mix of a good summer 2018 and winter 2018/19, and probably you just paying a bit more attention to them too!

    I'm also curious about this.

It could be the same one all the time, just wearing a false beard or glasses.
