    Just a passing thought,

But would Lyra McKee have been mentioned so much if she was not gay?

Seems that these days you are only worthy of Airtime if you are not 100% average.

Or am I Waayyy off with that opinion??

Oh boy you're in for it!

If any young, innocent person was shot dead for no reason though, there would be the same level of anger and sadness.

I think your cynicism is misplaced, and a bit in poor taste (I'm being kind compared to the coming onslaught!)

    Does her orientation really matter?

I agree 100% but you will get slaughtered for airing your honest view,
I also think it was daft putting herself in the firing line like that.

I didn't even know she was gay until your post, OP. I have not heard it mentioned once in any coverage I have seen.

A reporter of growing international note was shot dead whilst doing her job.
Her orientation is of less note in the exposure of this story, than her coining the term "ceasefire babies" and being a voice of hope for those born in a time without open conflict in N.I.

A reporter was murdered, whilst covering a story.
Doesn't matter that she was LGBT, what matters is a reporter was indiscriminatly murdered whilst covering a story.

Don't agree with the OP's sentiment at all but it definitely was mentioned quite a bit, there was the story of coming out to her mum and all.

I think youre bang out of order.

A 29 year old woman was shot dead in circumstances that hark back to a time that most of the country had hoped we'd moved on from.

    Her sexuality is irrelevant.

Yes it was mentioned in speaking about her after her death but that's because it was a part of her life she was vocal about.

She is being talked about because she was an innocent victim of absolute scumbags and was murdered while doing her job. Her orientation has nothing to do with it.

    How very dare you !!
Why do you agree? You know that there would be an unlimited outpouring of sorrow and anger if any person aged not even 30 was shot dead for no reason.

It's all in your head. Now I agree it could be applicable in other situations but really... this one?

I dont think there would have been the same outpouring of grief if some innocent lad on the estate was shot up that night

    Absolute nonsense.

Why did the murder of Veronica Guerin get so much attention also, in that case?

    What firing line?

She was a reporter, reporting on an ongoing situation in Derry, it's not as if she was in the middle of the Gaza strip!

OP looking for a reaction, and succeeding.

    Wowza.....

I think sadly for Lyra McKee, she wouldnt have been mentioned so much if some thug hadnt started firing a gun into a crowd in the middle of the night.

    Everything after that is incidental.

Not sure why but the whole situation was really blown up and all over every media platform they could find.
I don't think her being gay has much to do with it

That's fair enough, I honestly didn't know. Or care tbh.

Are there regularly murders of straight journalists that aren't being covered to the same extent as this murder?

    You're "not sure why"?

    Fupping hell...

Veronica guerin was not gay and there's a statue of her in Dublin castle. Reporters being killed are generally huge stories.

100% they(the press) went into her back story like an entrant in the xfactor with all her sob stories thrown in.
People are missing the op's point imo.

    Wow.

I've seen some shitty threads in my time here OP, this is among the worst.
