After the movie that was nominated this year about the death of Jamie Bulger we have another high profile case of children accused of a violent and disturbing crime.

I am saddened that this is being reported in the media and I am am a little despiaring about the inveitable use of salacious details from this trial that will be used to sell papers not giving a monkeys about the accused the defendants or their families. The fact that the victim was named because you cannot defame the dead is evidence of that.

I hope this crime can be the start of a national discourse around pornography and violence and the desensitation of our youth through violent videogames and sexualised content in films, movies, and pornography.

There will be a cohort happy to accept a very simplistic black/ white evil explanation but the world does not work like that and when it is children committing crimes against other children then we as a sociey have to ask ourselves some hard questions about censorship and what is actually voyeuristic and dangerous.

My son is around the same age and went to school in Lucan. I had to sit down and talk to him about issues that were deeply uncomfortable but I am glad that this talk happened.

I am fearful for this trial and the hysteria it is going to produce on both sides of the spectrum.
