Importing a car from NI to ROI

    Hi folks,

Just recently moved down to Dublin and looking to take my car with me. My ma bought it in 2003, and passed it on to me in 2009. It looks like a scrapper but has a great engine and I know it's worth.

Now I believe I am exempt from VRT because it has been mine for longer than 6 months. I'm getting a bit confused trying to understand what I need to do:

    https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/guide-to-vrt/vehicle-registration-tax/procedure-at-the-ncts-centre.aspx

So for a used car I need:

I also need my V5C (UK log book thingy)

Going by what I have read do you think the below steps are correct and are in the correct order?
    1. I need to get my VRT exemption notification. https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/guide-to-vrt/reliefs-and-exemptions/transfer-of-residence.aspx - first of all I need to ring revenue and tell them I am doing so and get an appointment with them? They'll tell me what documents I need.
    2. Book an appointment with my nearest NCT centre and bring all of the above documents with me. They'll assign me a new reg plate. Hopefully pass the NCT test.
    3. Purchase said reg plate from them and have them fit it.
    4. Pay tax.
    5. Get insurance for the new property.
    6. Drive about happy.

    Any advice would be great.

CO2 emissions should be stated in the V5C.

Maybe get some receipt of the M1 toll, or some other proof you drove in that direction?

It's your responsibility to buy and fit number plates, the NCT centre may or may not sell them.

    Grand - I'll check the V5C later.

M1 toll receipt is a good idea. Suppose there's no other option really.

Ah ok cheers, might have to source them elsewhere.

Outside of the discussion, you get your first car into the State free of VRT.

It would be a shame to bring an old banger in and waste a good opportunity!

But it would only work if you are able to buy a newish car that you intended to keep for a while.

But he/she would be required to have owned it for at least 6 months while still resident in NI so that won’t work.

You can import more than one vehicle at the same time free of VRT under Transfer of Residence rules as long as each one complies with the requirements (owned, insured and used for more than 6 months etc.).

I can't see how that would prove anything. I have to get receipts for work but that doesn't mean I imported anything. Thousands of NI registered vehicles pay a toll daily.

(And the toll is not at a border crossing - Dundalk to Drogheda does not involve any border crossing).

If you could... I would delay your move by 6 months... and even get a loan from the bank and buy something bigger and you could easily make €20,000... however you’d need to find a buyer who is willing to work with you on the 12 month ownership, as you cannot sell the car for 12 months once you arrive which I think is bizarre as the owner should be entitled to sell their car whenever they like.

Vehicle can be imported up to 6 months after actual Transfer of Residence, AFAIR. You still have to have owned and used it for at least 6 months before move here.

You can sell the car in Ireland by arrangement, which involves actually paying the VRT. Seems fair enough given that the sale price in ROI would be higher and the value effectively includes VRT.
I’m not sure what you’re suggesting re the 12 month thing and working with the new owner?

It is at least something to suggest the car was in the ROI on the day claimed, because as you know we have open borders so there would be no records of that. I've never got a receipt but surely it'd say the direction and registration? Better than nothing, if it is required.

I imported a car from the North and was not asked to provide proof of it entering the country, but I did not own it in the UK beforehand so it's a different situation.

I could be wrong but I thought you couldn’t sell a car that you import (for free), for 12 months?

It is explained in the post you quoted. Sale before 12 months has elapsed =› VRT must be paid; sale after 12 months =› no VRT payable.
