I had a pedigree Hereford heifer in heat last night. There was a 10 month old Pedigree Hereford bull mounting her and he was giving it fair welly! Would he be old enough and fertile to put her in calf?

He should be well fit to put her incalf, I find that if you had another plan in mind for her that she'll almost certainly hold to the young imposter. Bull calves generally seem to show interest in bulling cows from 6 months on in my experience and usually become fertile shortly after. At 10 months if he's a well fed calf serving shouldn't be a problem provided he's tall enough to actually find the mark. Observing what happens after he mounts will often reveal whether or not it was successful, the bull will usually give a "jump" at the crucial moment and the cow will stand with her tail out afterwards.

He was jumping on her plenty! id say he could have done the damage as the heifer herself is not very tall. The only problem, well for some people would be, it's his half sister. I wasn't expecting her to come in heat as she was not all winter, I was going to get her scanned to check her out.

If you didn't intend a pregnancy then I'd be fairly confident she'll hold first time to him. I'm not that well informed on the intricacies of line breeding but I'd imagine that half siblings shouldn't be a massive risk if she does eventually produce a calf from the encounter. The option of giving an injection to cause abortion in the heifer is available if she doesn't show a heat in 3 weeks time, ask your vet about this option. Once both sexes cross 6 months you need to watch for unexpected pregnancies imo, it's a fairly common occurrence but is easily avoided provided you're aware of the risk.

You'l find out if she's in calf in 3 weeks time. No need to scan till well after then and only if she doesn't come bulling again. If in calf, she may give off a weak heat though in 3weeks.

It's better to know about it rather than sell her and get a phone call in a few months time about it. I often wonder how many store heifers and cows prove to be incalf despite being sold as empty. I know of a few lads that used to feed bundles of heifers that changed to buying stores over weanlings due to the amount of young heifers proving incalf.

Give her a shot of hormone from the vet
